Jim is a legend. Led the AMD A8 which was the first real "oh shit" moment for Intel, and co-authored the x86-64 ISA. Bootstrapped the silicon teams for both Apple and Tesla.

Web browsers are unfortunately a case where even memory safe-ish languages are really an incomplete solution. Writing a JavaScript JIT in Rust won't prevent optimizer bugs.

(A) Vine was horribly mismanaged by Twitter. No marketing, no interesting new features, needless attempts to integrate it into Twitter. (B) How would the average consumer know it's Chinese? They totally rebranded it from their mainland

Not sure I fully buy this op-ed's claims but honestly Germany isn't the ideal place for on-shore wind anyway. The capacity factor in Germany for wind is only around 20%. In the US it's more like 35%. So further expansion requ

I'm kind of surprised it took this long for someone to do this. It was clear very early on that the JVM was a bad match for what Spark was trying to do.

That just means they add bicycle setbacks in an attempt to scare drivers. It doesn't solve the problem when people are routinely allowed to drive without demonstrating an understanding of how a traffic light is supposed to be interpret

This will get more people on bicycles, which will almost certainly make the problem worse, unfortunately. No amount of lane protection prevents collisions in intersections, which is where nearly all the deaths happen. The problem isn't

So DEC thought of this as a way to edit IBM cards but IBM didn't? The implicit claim is that somehow the machines for manufacturing punch cards were reused for computer output and that is what terminals were trying to emulate. But sure

The leap between IBM punchcards and VT100 makes no sense. Teletypewriters used 72 characters per line. IBM mainframe line printers used 132 characters per line. DEC and IBM probably just happened to pick 80 character columns for unrelated r
