As I have aged (almost 50 now) I have realised that greed will turn any good thing dark without vigilance, and then who watches the watchers. Eternal spring perpetually. A culture which prioritises individual profits over the commons will d

OMG i loved my 3dfx vodoo 3 card. I had a 20 port hub and we would basically have roaming LAN parties. You brought back a lot of good memories here.

Didn't the Malthusian cycle result in labour shortages continously? What about the roman empire (byzantanian) after plagues?

many moons ago, before git was released, I put svn in front of clearcase and had people locally commit to that, trap into hooks of svn, check the file out of clearcase commit and recheck-in. the whole engineering group I worked in switched

Agreed on using energy consumption and how many times do you reasonably expect to use it as important considerations. Additionally you have to factor in the toxicity you introduce, especially with things like cookware. An umbrella maybe a 1

Closure team have also deprecated a lot of the old tooling. Closue was ahead of it's time for sure and as someone who heavily used the Closure Library and Closure compiler in advanced mode, it is sad that it did not catch on. However u

no, I don't think this is accurate. You can have processes run on a device in the background, you can pair bluetooth to it, you can send data back with it.

The cache TTL on VOD is significantly higher, so your whole infrastructure needs to have a live origin, which gets hit repeatedly to get the latest fragments/segments from the origin, from multiple edges/midgresses. I find that ou

That is such a weird system of value. Obviously there are people who will do that. The reality is that sex work happens, bringing it out of the shadows protects the most vulnerable people, mores have very little to do with this. As a societ

Delivery on web IOS specifically is the PITA. This post however uses CMAF and with IOS offering better API's for video from the next release there is a bit of hope that this protocol could be implemented without Apple needing to do it,

protocols like quic and srt (used for video) are great, forward error/erasure correction is something I would also mention as a large part of the rise of UDP over TCP based transfer/protocols.

This is basically what cmaf is. the moov and ftyp gets sent at the beginning (and frequently gets written as an init segment) and then the rest of the stream is a continuous stream of moof's and mdat's chunked as per gstreamer

Same in video parsers and tooling frequently, expects a whole mp4 to be there, or a whole video to parse it, yet gstreamer/ffmpegapi delivers the content as a stream of buffers that you have to process one buffer at a time.
