Dragon book is something a compiler writer should read, but after he's gone through a compiler construction book first (I like Wirth's book; short and to the point). Definitely not an intro to compilation, it would scare me away.

Yaron Minsky said in one of his talks that hiring OCaml programmers was the easiest thing in the world: he posted an ad on the mailing list, got 20 applications, 15 of which were worthy of a phone interview. Of those 15, 5 were asked to co

Though I find these contests very interesting, I can only wish that as much resources was spent to develop a viable alternative to C++ that would make many of those vulnerabilities impossible. Languages like Rust, ATS and BitC come to mind

I'd add that Unicode support is also a problem. latin-1 isn't even good for French. My brother's name is Jérôme and the first thing I try with any language to check strings is this: # print_endline (String.uppercase "Jérôme");;

I've started using magit and I really like it; I like that I can just say "revert" on a file and magit knows what the right command is. Makes me think a whole lot less about Git and a whole lot more about my project.

I guess the Rust compiler is the most non-trivial Rust program at the moment. You can start there. I've been reading the lexer and parser code (cause I've got to write those for a class) and it's very easy to follow.

Rust is also natively unicode-aware. OCaml is not.

`C-u SPC` which pops the mark. This allows you to go back to different places in your buffer quickly. For example, if you are editing a program and need to add an import statement, you could do it like this: `C-SPC M-< [add your impor

The code is already tail recursive, which is why it's doubly puzzling. Also, like you said, using an Integer instead fixes the problem. But I find that fixing these issues distracts me away from the main problem and that doesn't happen in

OK, so we were learning about greedy algorithms at school and I implemented a very naive implementation of a change making algorithm for Canadian coins. Here's the Haskell code: makeChange :: Int -> [Int] makeChange amount =

I found that one of the largest difference between Haskell and OCaml is the amount of time I spent figuring out how to make code go fast. Because OCaml is eagerly evaluated and that its compiler is extremely simple, I find that the "tools"

I was doing a homework for an algorithms class today. I wrote a quick implementation in Python with some quickcheck tests to make sure it worked correctly. Running 10,000 tests with CPython 2.7 took 136s on my laptop. For fun, I tried wi

> Don’t try to read a lot of different books at once This really resonates with me as I have often 2-3 books on a particular subject that I will quickly skim through to find the one that I want to spend more time studying.

Maybe Clay ( http://tachyon.in/clay/ ) would interest you then? It does not explicitly says that it can be used for kernel development, but from the feature set it seems like it could.
