Deputy Director jobs in the UK Civil Service aren’t actually that senior. They tend to pay around £75k, or $100k US, which is a pretty decent wage for the general population but not quite at levels.fyi rates.

The single Amazon review of Cave Exploring has a familiar echo: “Recommends that female cavers don't wear bras. So bad it is good. I bought it only because the National Speleological Society had it withdrawn from sale because it encour

I think you might be falling into a cycle that I often find myself falling in to. It goes like this: Oh, there's a bug. But it's obviously caused by _this line here_, so I won't even bother testing it offline, I'll just

Have you ever tried reporting a phishing site through those legitimate channels? I have, and my experiences have been that: * The domain registrars are apologetic and well-meaning, but tend to explain that they aren't empowered to take

I have a home office situated 15-20m from an Openreach manhole. The building is less than 20 years old so there is an existing, unused, duct from the manhole directly to my home office. I live in an FTTC area so there is already fibre nearb

Definitely agree. Only a small percentage of the general public here seem to understand the difference between FTTC (which is what we have) and FTTP/FTTH (which is what we need). Perhaps if they did then the Gov would have to work hard

From what I've read, the issue is that the reduced performance has a direct effect on stability: When used as part of a RAID array then these disks can exhibit unexpected long pauses under load, which causes the RAID controller to mark

You’re right. The issue is that in this particular application I need _both_ a work queue and a message bus. I’ve also successfully used Rabbit as a work queue, but it’s not high-throughput enough to meet my messaging needs. Pulsar seems to

Something that I wish I had known about Apache Kafka a year or so ago is that it essentially has no support for long-running tasks, i.e. tasks where longest-possible-worker-execution-time >> longest-tolerable-group-rebalance-time. Aft

The training doesn’t teach you to “ignore signs and signals.” The point is that the overwhelming majority of junctions of this type are marked Give Way, and the trained behaviour on a Give Way junction is to slow and take careful note of ot

I also got burned by this. However, I'm going to buck the trend and say something nice about Scaleway: I've been using their managed Kubernetes product, Kapsule, for a few months now and I have generally been happy with it. It

OK, that's a little more understandable. I assume that the initial use of HTTP is an intentional tactic that Steam uses to discover whether it is behind a captive portal or similar. That being the case then yes, the Steam client should

So in a nutshell, could we summarise the issue here as "Valve didn't use TLS and thus Valve's users are vulnerable to the exceptionally well-known consequences of not using TLS?" If so, then... okay, but I don't kno

From the NCSC themselves: The cap at 35% ensures the UK will not become nationally dependent on a high risk vendor while retaining competition in the market and allowing operators to continue to use two Radio Access Network (RAN) vendors.

There’s a lot of speculation in the comments here around exactly what the UK is or isn’t doing, and why. The NCSC’s Technical Director has laid it out in detail: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/blog-post/the-future-of-telecoms-
