Yeah, the other thing that I should have noticed was the completely unreasonable cost of 1 TWh of energy. If 1 kWh cost about $0.15 at the time they trained the model, 1TWh would have been like $150M. Probably twice that after accounting fo

Thanks for explaining the calculation! There is a huge error though, which is that I mis-read the units in the second link I posted. The actual power estimate for GPT-3 is more like 1 GWh (not 1TWh), so about 6000 years and not 6 million...

I can't edit my post any more, but I'm a moron: the article says about a GWh, not a TWh. So the calculation is out by a factor of 1000.

One thing that the essay doesn't consider is the importance of efficiency in computation. Efficiency is important because in practice it is often the factor which most limits the scalability of a computational system. The human brain

The article claims about 3 million truck tractors on US roads, and puts the cost of each driver at about $65k/year. Am I correct in naively calculating something like $200B/year on the table for full-self-driving truck technology?

Again, this is kind of making my point. IPv4 had an excuse for being a bit crap, because it was designed in the early 1980s. IPv6 should have been much better than it is. Adoption was always going to be slow, but it never needed to be thi

I think you're being unfair to the audience. The main complaints here aren't about the consequences of those legacy problems, they're about the fact that IPv6 is just such a mediocre designed-by-committee protocol. Your point

To be able to port around an IP address, you need to be able to change the Autonomous System (AS) which advertises it. The minimum IPv4 range which can be advertised is a /24 (256 IPs), so you will need one of those for full portabilit
