Most people don't want to dialogue more with people who don't share their values, they'd much rather find people who do share their values. We are tribal animals, the current dissent in this country is a symptom of our triba

Bitcoin exchanges are full of manual TA chart traders, to them everyone running algo's is a HFT; context matters, you can't compare the nascent tech in Bitcoin to a modern Wall Street exchange. If you're algo trading as fast

On a modern exchange it does mean that because that's what it takes to trades as fast as possible, on a low tech bitcoin exchange where such speeds are not possible, it takes much less; it's HFT none the less. It's still comp

In the real world, that's illegal. In the bitcoin world, it will be eventually but until then, looking at the order book is a waste of time, it's all fake.

Terrible plan, even if it double or tripled in a year you're not going to retire from that and given its history it's entirely possible it'll be half the current value next year.

That doesn't mean there's no HFT; automated trading as fast as the exchanges allow is HFT.

Those jobs exist due to regulatory capture and the difficulty of changing tax law in a bitterly divided nation, just because a few industries found a way to use government to prevent progress and automation doesn't mean progress and au

When should people attempt to regulate AI, when it's too late? Stopping a problem before it happens is called foresight. And if you pay attention to the press, it's not about killing us all, it's about disrupting the world,

Looking for top performers is always invoking survivor bias. It's a classic data snooping issue where the common sense approach is exactly wrong, but it'll sell a lot of books and it'll convince people who you know what you&

And they would be right to do so, because "rights" are not inherent, they're simply social agreements and are thus always up for negotiation. Nature doesn't provide people rights, people do.

And back to moving the goal post. The discussion is about where the dollar's value primarily comes from, not about whether energy is more than just a commodity never mind that energy != oil as oil only makes up about ~4% of world ener

You're on HN, please don't assume only you understand the complexities of the world. Everything is more complicated than one simple thing, but you don't get to level that critique after claiming the value comes from oil. W

Why on earth would they want to provide free private repo's, that's something they charge for... ON PURPOSE. They aren't taking "forever", they're simply not going to do that.

Linux will likely outlive all of us. Network effects are massively strong for operating systems, we've been stuck with the same basic 3 for decades and that's likely to stay the same.

Kernel development shouldn't have a low bar, it should have a very very high one. Anyone that finds email a high bar for communication doesn't belong in Kernel development.

The dollar doesn't get its value from oil, it gets its value from being the sole currency accepted for your tax bill, i.e. its value derives from its tax base. That is why fiat works, it's what "by fiat" means, and why

It's a server, you don't put databases on non RAID drives anyway, that'd be silly as the loss of a single drive would lose all your data. RAID setup isn't an option, it's how things are done by default for servers
