This used to be one of my favorite Google UI Engineer interview questions - how to implement something like this as a content script. One of the fun "get away from math and into experience" bonus parts of the question was about ho

I designed[1] the Chrome Omnibox, and appreciate a lot of the conjecture in this thread and other places - I wish I was as devious as many people assume we were. The short version is that while many users can differentiate, it's more a

Double agree with this suggestion - as I've split my life between hemispheres, weatherspark has been enormously useful for explaining relative climates to new and old friends, but I always have to edit the comparison graphs myself to p

I held off doing PCB stuff for a long time because the tools seemed incredibly complex and intimidating, and now I wonder how I ever did anything without it. The things I wish someone had told me: - all a PCB is, is a flat version of your h

I did a Show HN eleven years ago for something called Dropmocks, which was an early use of the HTML5 drag and drop API to make image sharing convenient - it sat at the top of HN for that weekend, got Techcrunch coverage[0] etc, which made m

Like most of the earthquakes I felt in the bay area, I spent most of it thinking it was an unbalanced dryer in the final stages of its cycle. It roughly felt equivalent to the 2014 Napa Quake (which was also a 6). For normally geologically-

One night a few months ago, after two large beers I imagined up a domain name that was SO PERFECT that I HAD TO BUY IT and swore that this time, unlike all the others, I was TOTALLY GOING TO DO SOMETHING WITH IT. The next morning, looking f

From the related links in this article, I learned that Visual Snow[1] is not what everyone sees at nighttime or when they close their eyes, as I have, for as long as I can remember. I just figured our eyes cranked their ISO sensitivity up.

I was so mad at their cancellation dark patterns I cancelled my otherwise-useful subscription. I live in California, but still didn't see an easy way to do it, so I swapped my billing method to PayPal and then cancelled it in the PayPa
