I would challenge that it is really a vast majority working at these highest levels of abstractions. There are thousands of people working on C#, Java and JavaScript runtimes and basic libraries. There are thousands of people working on c

If you want a "raw" driving experience, you need to go on a race track in a "proper" race car. I use the quotes because you could come up with very diffferent definitions for them depending on your particular perspective

That is wishful thinking. Every layer we added between humans and the machines (and even the ones in the machines themselves) take hordes of dedicated humans to maintain: IDEs, compilers/interpreters, linters, CI tools, assemblers, lin

Sometimes (only sometimes, I promise) I wonder whether this kind of legislation is being dreamt up by a think tank tasked with planning how to implement some ulterior goal (e.g. massively increased surveillance to fight crime - it's fa

I haven't even had a cursory look at decoders state of the art for 10+ years. But my intuition would say that decoding for display could profit a lot from GPU acceleration for later parts of the process when there is already pixel data

Slightly more technical: every function that is continuous on a finite support can be expanded into an infinite Fourier series. The terms of that series form an orthonormal basis in the Hilbert space over the function's support, so thi

I had to deal with the DS-160 multiple times over the year. I don't think you give justice to how bad this website really is. I have started to notice that these "timeouts" are very random. At the worst times, the session &qu

No, MIDI is absolutely not isomorphic to sheet music.

Music notation is definitely not one-dimensional because it encodes simultaneous occurrence and simultaneous time-progression of independent pitches (e.g. a sequence of cords played legato).

Digital video is a big enough amount of data that replication at scale takes up a significant amount of netural resources and energy. That is true both for storage and transmission/streaming.

I intended that line to be ambiguous. My real point is that whatever their true motives, they have managed to shed a lot of the Evil Empire appearance and younger people weren't even around when the really bad behavior was at its peak.

This comment comes some 15 years late. Microsoft runs the biggest org on github and has open sourced a lot of their own code under permissive licenses. IE has been dead and buried for ages. Edge doesn't have even close to the same mark

I like that idea. The printing process should probably be inverted: cool the paper as a whole to darken the whole sheet amd use a small heating coil to erase.

I was indeed not thinking about deliberate attacks. But that doesn't change the result much as I assume that the CASTOR containers that I used as reference are designed to withstand all of these worst case scenarios.

I'm not filled with optimism about this concept. Let's work backwards from crash safety (say a reactor on a truck getting t-boned by a freight train). The radioactive material needs to be held in an armored containment to avoid re

My argument isn't as much about the tech as it is about managing risk on the bank's side. Imagine claims like "the XYZ bank app mangled my input and now my money is gone". I'm certain that people have sued for less.

You assume that you always have a mature option available. That's (a) definitely not a totally generalizable assumption and (b) my point is that mature options only exist because the people that developed them just did it when confront
