Don't confuse recyclable with reusable. I think your mental timescale here is a bit too small. "Built to last" means what? 10 years, optimistically. That means that in 10 years, those products will still be sitting in a landfill...for hundr

To what extent do you think its possible to change behaviors like this? That is to say, to what extent do you believe people's reaction to this sort of stuff are innate human behaviors and reactions, and how much is learned through interact

I think its pretty arbitrary to claim that "changing these behaviors" would "make the web a better place". I think if people think and react in a certain way, there is nothing wrong with that, and web design should evolve around how people

From a comment on the page, if anyone missed it: "This story is true, and the conclusion too, except that it was Von Neumann, not Turing, deriding such a tool as a waste of computer time for clerical work. Turing, in stark contrast to Von N

Wow, at all? That's surprising. Certainly there are more males in tech, but that's still unusual. If you don't mind me asking, what region are you from? Sadly, even as a woman, I myself am often guilty of assuming other programmers are men,

I understand that its easy and important to pour resources into educating the already motivated. The justification is clear, they want to be there, they want to learn, they "deserve it". Yet, unless I'm misreading your comment, it appears a

Apologies if the wording wasn't clear in the original comment. The students who applied for the program performed about the same, regardless of whether they went to the "good" schools or the "bad" ones. I'm not arguing that an environment w

I remember reading an article at one point about a study done on high school students. I can't remember exact details, but there was a program where students in areas with bad high schools could apply to be sent to better high schools. If I

The key with finding a role model that inspires you is often times finding someone you can relate to. I don't think its an exaggeration that in the STEM fields, its much easier to find examples of male role models than female ones. Which is

It seems as though the problem with determinism could be solved with random number seeding. If the server generates seeds, the two could stay synced even with random numbers. The physics engine is a bit more difficult hurdle I suppose.

While I do think the phenomena is really cool, the article states how it may be used to forewarn of earthquakes and bridge collapses. I'm curious how much benefit could be gained from knowing of an earthquake a few seconds in advance?
