I believe this post was stickied at the top of the golang subreddit for a bit: https://www.reddit.com/r/golang/comments/5eubdp/the_future_o... It should be a good summary of the event.

It's worth noting that `man proc` has pretty exhaustive, though incomplete, documentation of the various files. It's a great read to learn about some of the files available.

At first I was really turned off by JSX. HTML in your JavaScript? Yuck! Then I migrated a 12k lines JS + 4k lines Angular templates to TypeScript. I didn't get any of the benefit of static typing in all of those html files. That was re

I usually contact the company directly to let them know when this happens. In all cases a hiring manager has thanked me because they were unaware of these tactics and were happy to get rid of this contract.

I knew I was going to get this comment when I wrote this... I only mention those two together as the previous options for low level, no runtime languages. Outside of Rust both C and C++ were independent options I've considered investin

I'd already looked through the slides for that talk but I'll check out the video. Thanks! I think C++ has a lot of awesome stuff coming out but I find Rust more pleasant to code in. Also having package/dependency management h

I answered a similar question to a sibling comment but I think it boils down to, I didn't come to Rust for functional features but I definitely enjoy them. The languages you mention in the post have a much higher learning curve coming

Another thing is the lack of runtime is really compelling. I can continue to write Python and can drop into Rust for hot code. Right now this is through C which does get me a bit of unsafety but it's much smaller scope. As Rust becomes

I'm personally interested in Rust for a couple reasons. As an SRE/SysAdmin I struggle to believe that C or C++ can be written safely. It is very common that I see software being emergency patched because of memory unsafety from ve

The biggest problem I've had with Python packages is that you can't use multiple version of the same package in a Python project without a lot of complex tricks. This becomes more and more a problem in large code bases over time.

I worked at Google from 2010 to 2012, just under two years, as an SRE. Google was a great company to work for and the people I worked with were all awesome. I ultimately left Google because I felt bored working there. You admin systems and

You probably want this page for str: http://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/std/primitive.str.html It's unfortunate that most of the links navigate you to the less useful doc.

One way I've solved this in the past which is a bit hacky but novel and fun was to set the MAILTO to some e-mail address like cron-error@ and use the local postfix process to map that e-mail to a command via transports. This allows us

Is it that unbelievable to you that a company that previously used other languages with spaces for indentation would desire to have a consistent indentation policy, especially considering that up until now the tooling supported such desires

I'm personally in the spaces camp but my favorite point in favor of tabs no one has mentioned is all of the bytes you're saving. In a large codebase you can save kilobytes to megabytes by switching from spaces to tabs. :)

The way people solve that is tabs for indentation and spaces for alignment. In my opinion this is a terrible compromise as mixing tabs and spaces is sacrilegious.

I'd say it's newsworthy to large Go shops that use spaces with gofmt and now have to change indentation in their repos. This isn't insignificant. Also it requires additional flags for things like blame/diff to ignore whi

The simplest answer I could think of is getting remote syslogging for free. This also makes it easier to process nginx logs in realtime without named pipe trickery. I'm pretty excited to clean up some log ingestion code.
