That’s a nice sentiment, but I don’t think it can reasonably be applied to most people. Consider the kids brought up around gang culture and taught to sling dope in middle school. Is that experience a net positive for them?

I think personality matters a lot here. One person may flaunt their open source contributions to their colleagues because they like the kudos. Another person may quietly commit and never publicize themselves because they don’t like being th

I’m also curious to know why OP prefers naive to tz aware datetimes. IMO naive datetimes are a bad default, and `utcnow()` deserves to be deprecated.

It makes the most sense if you value your own wellbeing over whatever “mission” a company is supposedly chasing.

Use best IoT practices. Treat a medical device like any new product whose data you want to remain secure. On the device itself, ensure your firmware is inaccessible to curious hackers. Most MCUs provide read back protection so enable it! En

This is purely speculation because I don’t work with ML, but I imagine most Ubuntu specific software tutorials can be applied to Debian as well. They use the same package manager (apt) and should effectively be able to compile/run all

Thanks for you perspective, Mike. Completely agree that the interface between data and code should be handled by a single tool. That tool must meet some minimum complexity, because it’s solving a very hard problem! Also just want to say tha

There’s a point in a company’s trajectory where quality becomes more important that quantity (speaking specifically of software features here). Early on it usually makes sense to throw things at a wall and see what sticks. But once there’s

While I agree with your sentiment, the problem with gun ownership in a place like SF is the risk of manslaughter charges. Shooting someone committing a property crime may be seen as justifiable from the eyes of the property owner, but not i

FWIW I’ve been using Linux Mint for years and have never had a major issue. Most minor issues are with out of date repository packages which can usually be installed by other means.

Type hints in Python are nice, by pale in comparison to truly typed languages. If you want to feel like your language’s type system significantly improves your development experience and the safety of your code, don’t pick Python.

Yep, I started the audio book back in August and just finished it earlier this week... 5 months may be a long time but it's probably shorter than the reign of most chieftains. Honestly I really disliked the audiobook. The reader was dr

I finished the book earlier this week, and can say it does distance itself from the initial chapters pretty quickly. They are important frames of reference, and I can definitely understand the authors reasons to include those ideas so promi

Anaka Harris on Lex’s podcast was fascinating. I loved hearing her perspective on consciousness and the limits of scientific inquiry. Second to that was the John Carmack interview which lots of folks on HN seemed to enjoy!

I 100% agree. Cutesy names should end once the package name has been chosen. Package authors and contributors that overdo the thematic names should stick to writing fiction, not code.

I went down a similar kettlebell rabbit hole, now it's one my favorite ways to exercise. I'd highly recommend the Mark Wildman videos on kettlebell technique if anyone else is interested in giving them a go.

I 100% agree with all your issues. Some product manager(s) at Spotify seriously messed up when they designed the queue system. Maybe it's too much to ask for the Next songs to actually play Next?
