This might work well in android where if one app (maps) hands over control to another (third party public transit info) -- the global back button will take you back to the first application when needed. iOS always seemed to be designed with

Android has map caching, but not for search or turn by turn nav Also, you can't map cache entire continents/countries like on Nokia devices (OK, you can, if you do it tediously in small sections) So Nokia (symbian/windows phone) still holds

All the more reason to turn off LTE in the phone. Not sure how the phone is configured, but it's entirely possible the phone is using up battery trying to find non-existent LTE towers unless it's explicitly disabled (but I do agree with you
