Go ahead, don't spend money on his business. But there's no need to make a huge deal out of it, as the boycott is doing. From our perspective, perhaps. I don't doubt the people behind the boycott think there is a substantial need to make

Because mutable state is an airy-fairy concept that has no relation to the world, of course.

Maybe we could just define "zero = 123456789" or something like that while we're at it. If we're going to break math we may as well go whole hog.

Can't wait til we come full circle and get back to client/server computing ;). The next big hype cycle: OS as an OS.

I bet most computer users have never used a bash shell. I still prefer the world with it to a hypothetical one without it. Same goes for high end computer games.

Please, exactly, tell me what a browser-OS is. Are we talking about something like Chrome OS, which looks like it will be an OS whose primary (edit: or even sole?) purpose is to run a browser? Then it's basically just a crippled version of

Who wrote the browser? The window manager? The compiler, assembler, and linker? What about computer games? I don't see us doing Crysis in Javascript any time soon. The web is great for some things, but some things aren't everything.

I'm reasonably sure you are the person closest to being outraged about anything in this discussion, heh. He was being funny, not raving about how 4chan is the root cause of all evil. And in any case, the fact that actively evil people exist

I might be off base here, but I suspect the poster you replied to was attempting to be humorous, rather than expressing a philosophical truth about how 4chan users are actually the most evil thing in human history. Provided I'm correct, you

Philosophically, I largely agree with you. The problem is raised by the fact that karma is largely a measure for "how long have you been on HN?" rather than anything that a sane person would like to base their opinion on. This is most clea

Congratulations; you have successfully introduced a whole new way to have off-by-one errors. People are used, due to forty years or more of tradition in the great majority of major languages, to zero-based indexing. Tossing that away Becau

Not sure why you don't like the new additions. In general you don't have to use them if you don't want to. I don't really disagree with you. That said, it's a little bit of an opt-out, in the same sense that arguing that C++ is just as cl

Which is the cutoff? Pick one arbitrarily. It's inelegant, sure, but we use it for all sorts of other things. Significant example: are you an adult? All sorts of perfectly intelligent, rational arguments could be raised saying "It depends

Whether or not a given measure is effective has little to do with whether it is an achievable goal in the U.S. political system.

One step in a direction does not always lead to the next Perhaps, but choreographing 50 million people (plus or minus an arbitrary number, depending on your country) is pretty tough, even on a good day.

Libertarians' views of reality are almost always less distorted than the downright wacko views held by most Democrats and Republicans, socialists and conservatives. From the perspective of a libertarian, perhaps.
