Yes, there are examples where the syllable discrepancy is a bit larger between English and Japanese, but I think you're right -- perhaps the syllable difference is not too big of a deal. Now that I think more about it, perhaps the actual ad

Agreed. I went to Japanese elementary school (in college now, so within the last 15 years) and didn't learn this lines method ever. What I found greatest about the Japanese method of learning multiplication was actually the method for learn

I think this would have been a stronger article if it had addressed the counterpoint that was floating around in my head the entire time I was reading this: correlation doesn't equal causation. While this phrase has become somewhat cliche,

I found it quite a stretch to call manufacturing exactly identical iPhones "truly one of our civilization’s greatest accomplishments". An impressive feat, to be sure, but pretty far down there on my "greatest accomplishments of civilization

I see the general point being made here, but it's important to put it in context. The current homepage design is arguably more minimalistic and useful than any design from 2000 onwards. Links to other Google services are conveniently locate

This is an important point to keep in mind. I was surprised that the analysis seems to suggest a slightly more favorable view of Obama's performance than Romney's on Twitter, given the general consensus in the media that Romney won. It's pr

It really annoys me that questions like this aren't welcome on Stack Overflow anymore. This is a great example of a question which doesn't have "one right answer" but is still constructive and relevant.

Looks like a pretty well-designed offering, and I appreciate the focus on security. However, to get me to switch from Things (or Remember the Milk, etc), it'll first need to match those offerings on all levels, and then offer a killer featu

Wow, I must say the comments on this post are a great example of the vitriolic nature of HN recently. I hope you guys don't get too discouraged by them. The site looks well designed, and I think there's definitely room for a social networki

A professor of mine who worked at Bell Labs once made the same point. "In the old days we had to think a lot about how our punch card program worked because we'd only find out if it worked the next day. Nowadays you guys just throw crap at

This is particularly timely given the recent success of the Mars rover landing, which is a good reminder that having a ton of meetings and spec-ing something out robustly in advance is still a valid approach in some contexts.

Congratulations to her for learning the basics, but I find it annoying that this article seems to consider "knowing how to code" as a binary variable, either you know it or you don't. What she really did is learn to add a basic website feat

I'm a happy RTM user as well. This doesn't look like it does anything better, although I guess for people who don't need the more advanced features of RTM it's a good alternative.
