Highly recommend "Silence on the wire" : http://nostarch.com/silence.htm It's the opposite of a practical security book, more philosophical I guess. A good read, full of more or less crazy ideas ..

A little off topic maybe, but I have literally never hear of any of those shows you listed.. OTOH, I do watch revisio3 shows from time to time and I can name many of their sponsors.

If you're using a client your mail is probably delivered to a local smtp server, might bounce around for a while, and is then delivered to gmail server. You don't know that the last step uses ssl/tsl. Even if it does, what about the 3 other

Thanks.. "[snip]..one might envision that instead of worrying about a lack of resources, the elasticity of the cloud could actually provide a surplus of compute, network and storage utility that could be just as bad as a deficit" http://

I wold argue that "DoS" is not vague, just a broad term. Aanyway.. You're right, it boils down to bandwidth flood (or maybe CPU..) in the end. Maybe CoS is not really a technical term, just made more relevant by the technological changes. O

You have a point, but the difference is that url's are not usually considered secret and are therefore not treated the same way a password would be. For example in the browser..

Is that a term? "Cost of service attack" ? If not, let's coin it :) Cost-of-service-attack: Consuming bandwidth or other resources in cloud based solutions to drive up the cost of running the service. Very easy when the cost is so tightly c

But humans are not born with a "passion to do X" and then live their entire lives in a vacuum. If it was seen as a quick way to build wealth and fame, I'm sure more people would be passionate about curing cancer.

I get your point, but it's hard to shake the feeling that "deferred altruism" is just an "excuse" to keep everything to our self. Also, I strongly believe it's hard to turn generous after being very selfish for a long time. Guess that's wha

The best way to stop something like this would probably be to claim that they disrupt other important, life preserving services. That would probably keep most people from putting them up.

Just FYI, I think that really depends on what kind of a person you are.. Some people prefer to write because it gives them an opportunity to explain things in an ordered, and well thought out fashion.

you have to expect it to peak a lot higher though.. The requests are probably not going to be distributed evenly over 24 hours.. (edit: but yeah, you only need 100 servers if you're running something with "enterprise" in the name ;)
