I saw "Utah Datacenter" linking to a wikipedia domain and I thought Wikimedia had set up a new datacenter in Utah. Turns out I was wrong.

It's a sign of our times. Indian English follows more or less the British pattern (colour instead of color etc.). However, recent times have seen a marked shift towards American spellings and pronunciation. I would imagine this is the case

It's the way numbers are written in India. 1,00,000 ( = 100,000 ) is 1 lakh and 1,00,00,000 ( = 10,000,000 ) is 1 crore. Millions and billions are not used a lot, but most people know what they are. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_A

Cucumbertown does this very well. They allow you to take a recipe and fork it – called “Write a variation” (on the left) [1]. IIRC quite a few recipes there are created this way. [1] http://www.cucumbertown.com/recipes/55228/baked-mac-chee

Oh yes, English is terrible at denoting the pronunciation with its script. Not so for French (or from what I hear, German). Most of the time you are able to predict the pronunciation based on a set of characters. Words in Indian languages w

Quite often you can figure out the essence of the sentences even if you don't know all the words. Of course, you do need to have a basic vocabulary. While speaking/writing it is possible for you to convey what you want to without using comp

Learning words != learning a language. Most of the posts I see on HN mostly revolve around learning languages. In my opinion that's only part of the problem. It's more difficult to get the structure of sentences and tenses correct. I person

How does learning pangrams help? I don't get how the author has benefited from learning all the letters of German when they mostly correspond to the English alphabet. It does sound like a cool thing to learn, but I can't think of any use be

I think the author wasn't just looking at a launch per se. He was looking for feedback and HN is arguably the best place for feedback w.r.t startups > HN community’s remarks and constructive criticism are pearls of wisdom

The blog mentions that they did have caching on with nginx (which is what Varnish does, isn't it?). The problems were because of nginx not caching the frontpage (configuration issue) and because there was an unexpected hit on solr.

I'm wondering if the backlash might actually be a good thing. If this sort of backlash becomes common, there will be a disincentive for artists to sign up with records who indulge in such nonsense. Perhaps the system will adapt such that pr

+1 to that. Among all the people I've ever known (in India) only 2 people are lactose intolerant. Indian society has, historically, placed a lot of importance on the cow and milk. Indian mythology has rich references to milk and other dairy

True. A lot of good companies recruiting from big name colleges (IITs, NITs etc.) are wasting their time. The people from those colleges more or less end up studying for CAT and leave to study for an MBA degree within an year. Increasingly

One thing that could help is a surge of tech-oriented startups. Startups in India tended to be copies of well-established models in the U.S. Things are beginning to change. I've personally seen a few startups which have innovative and tech-
