It sounded like his solution was the idea of the sampled-down rss-esque feed, with the only purchasing taking place through the artist's own paypal-or-whatever basket. The feed protocol needs to have some sort of cryptographic audit trai

(Representative) Republics use hierarchical voting: citizens elect representatives, representatives vote on issues and elect representatives from their own pool for higher bodies. Democracies give one vote to every citizen on all issues.

To me 'managing it' means managing risks, which often means managing long-term expectations. Debt can't exist without risk, even the technical debt mentioned here. The way you manage that risk really depends on project-specific variables

I usually want that when what I really need is ordering but for some reason I want key-based/random access to the values. I think Ruby added this recently. I'm not using it yet. A crappy hack can just dump the next/prev key into the value

Wow. Maybe karma needs to be more meaningful...perhaps a reflection of who voted for you and what percentage of page views voted for you. It's not that I want to see social stratification edified on HN; but if your comment is voted for

I usually use the various options for a contrived test case or two, hack together a quick trade study, and pick something that meets my needs. Not so possible with hardware or closed-source though...

Most compression algorithms do consider the context of previously-received data -- but only from the same file/unit/transmission/whetever, aside from predefined contexts and dictionaries for some algorithms (like the DCT in jpeg or the fixe

Don't mistake this comment as me trying to make this thread a political flamewar. I agree with you that technologies used by government are ripe for disruption -- and in my opinion the Senate and Geithner today pretty much guaranteed that

I have noticed that high-quality comments are still voted up pretty well, and while some witty banter gets a rocket ride too it's not unbearable. This community has been over variations of this topic quite a few times. The conclusion I dre

Despite this being sort of a doomer rant, I really got a chuckle from the snarky bit at the end: "I mean, we can't just give people food for free . That would be ridiculous."

Maybe the problem is that Americans are already bursting at the seams from too much debt and no matter how far you stuff that firehose down the pig's throat it just can't hold any more. So no matter how much CONgress wants the banks to lend

I feel sorry for David Brooks, because he may never experience life. He may never experience that moment when one knows he or she truly exists, that there is no blue pill, no "way we are supposed to act", and that life is not about climbing

Really? We gave these banks TARP money and they're out spending it on hoarding oil so they can jack consumer prices later? Talk about sleazy.
