I suspect this is mostly useless for tech folks as you said; but it might be interesting for lower wage jobs that bait people with "Mcdonalds hiring for $20 / hour" and a tiny asterisk hidden there etc.

2nd hand knowledge from MS employee friends. If you don't have a vaccine you can still go to office as long as you wear a mask and take a test every 3 weeks. Not sure how that's enforced (or even if it's enforceable).

Microsoft did it as well last week when announcing return to office by February 28. Lots of little companies around Seattle followed suit.

Lol, that'd be Putin's wet dream. So all Russians switch to alternatives fully owned and controlled by the government and he gets to blame the west for the switch.

I don't trust Apple; they are shady AF and I'm convinced they are hard at work building an AD empire to rival Google and Facebook behind the scenes. Their so-called "privacy" moves are very clearly designed to limit Face

How do you identify tracking proxies though? When everything is going through the same domain you don't even know if data is being sent to Google, it's all a server-side black box.

The server-side "analytics" of 20 years ago was for aggregate reports on popular pages, number of users, their browsers and OSs and maybe their geo-location; solely for the use of the site owners to optimize and whatnot. This abom

Highly doubtful the method would continue to be called "gtag"; any js bundling / minification would replace that with a randomly generated string, and it's just as easy to randomize the server-side api endpoint url, maki

God damn... this is it, this is the end-game. There's no way to fight this unless you customize and maintain blocking scripts for each individual website. Yes, websites could always have done this, but the REST (CDN-bypassing) requests

There are a couple of open source projects like http://opentaxsolver.sourceforge.net/ and https://ustaxes.org/ ; perhaps we should support these to get to the point where they can actually replace TurboTax

It's a code editor, not an IDE... they never claimed otherwise. Sure, there are extensions now that almost make it an IDE (integrated debugger, support for some build systems, etc.) but if you need the real thing, get the real thing. F

Yeah right, the folks that write our intranet tools are the ones not qualified enough to work on a shipping product (I know this is harsh but the few exceptions just prove the rule). No way in hell we'd expose their stuff directly to t

Not really the same. WASM is part of the browser and an open web standard. It can be emulated entirely in JavaScript which comes with serious security guarantees. Java applets are in the same category as ActiveX controls, which is basically

"Privacy Preserving" and Meta do not belong in the same sentence. I guess they want some financial contributions from Meta too since Google's don't cover the C-tier compensation bump.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft 365 is GDPR-compliant and is storing data in whatever jurisdiction you set it up to. I know we've had a lot of issues with an European company we bought; we're both using Microsoft 365 but they'

We own a 2014 CX-5 near Seattle, and it doesn't appear to have been affected. Perhaps you needed to be tuned to that station in that time-frame to get the bug.

I seriously doubt this data. Go, Perl and... HTML pay more than C++? In what world? Good / experienced C++ devs are very hard to come by nowadays, and scarcity creates value.

I can agree with you, as long as Apple allows app developers to clearly spell out that the cost is higher because of the Apple tax and that they have the choice to sign up online if they choose.

SOCKS5, the protocol, is not encrypted. Data is sent in clear text across the wire and can be intercepted at any time. Of course, the data is just TCP and UDP packets, so you could be running a HTTPS connection over it (or DOH for DNS) but

SOCKS5 does not encrypt traffic, so if you put in a public / internet SOCKS5 server address that won't prevent snooping. If you have a spare Raspberry Pi (perhaps running PiHole / AdGuard as well which takes care of DNS secur

You can use different VPN providers per-container-type; go to manage containers, select your container type, then click on Advanced proxy settings (last option); there you can input a proxy address. For testing, you can just type the SOCKS5

I'm running both Docker and VirtualBox on my 5950x in Win11; don't remember doing anything special, but VirtualBox chose Hyper-V as the hypervisor technology, maybe it didn't default to that for you.

It's a NAT router so needs at minimum to masquerade (change the src/dest IP in the packet headers to match the internal / public). I'd also be running fail2ban or crowdsec for the bare intrusion detection.
