Oh, I see. I guess I misinterpreted what kind of censorship you were asking about. But that also might help combat censorship by governments if you can get your data hosted outside of your country. Not sure how well that would work in pract

The point to having the system is that if someone who is a publisher is being censored, they can move their content to another platform and their entire audience knows they moved because their "location" is in the blockchain. That

Not the GP, but I see it happening with a global, but decentralized ID system. I wrote about a possible design at https://gavinhoward.com/2020/07/decentralizing-the-internet-... .

Unlike CVS and Subversion, git is big enough that it won't just be replaced. What comes next needs to be incredible to even have a chance. Personally, I think the next big VCS will have the ability to handle all files, including binary

I'm not sure I agree with you. Writing a hash map implementation in C made me a much better programmer as far as performance goes because I understand the machine better.

I use `gdb-dashboard` along with others, but mine is heavily modified. I wrote about mine at https://gavinhoward.com/2020/12/my-development-environment-a... .

That could work, if such a minimal set exists.

A lot of the comments here are saying that js and css should be inlined to make loading faster. I disagree. They should be small (or nonexistent in the case of js), but I believe they should be separate, and proper caching enabled. This

I wrote my thoughts on this sort of thing in a blog post: https://gavinhoward.com/2019/11/recommendations-and-radicali... .

On the flip side, with libraries that use version symbols, you need to update all of the versions, so dynamic linking might have some of the same problem.

I do hope a fully distributed system is possible. I have even tried to develop a design. https://gavinhoward.com/2020/07/decentralizing-the-internet-...

Urbit's system creates an elite: the galaxy owners. They will, of course, use their positions to seek rent and grab "land" (control over territory, where territory is just planets and the like).

I think you didn't understand me. I do understand that Joe Average wants to use general-purpose computing to accomplish things. My point is that Joe Average does not understand the hidden costs of using computers that are spying on him

The phrase "snooping aside" invalidates your whole argument. It's not like using a car will harm Joe Average on average, but because of the snooping carried on by general-purpose computers, using a computer does hurt Joe Av

Unfortunately, I think this author is far more correct than not. Also unfortunately, we can't just create computer companies that do better; there are too many perverse incentives.

Nice! Can you post the bc script you used? I use bc as my desktop calculator instead of a graphical calculator. I use one with more extensions than GNU bc, so it is useful for me when programming.

I disagree. I think that software is only finished when new features are not being added. I believe it is possible to watch for bug reports and fix them, which means the software is still maintained, but in order to be finished, I think use

I use bc. There's only so much you can add to it. I also think programmers should try to finish the software they write. https://gavinhoward.com/2019/11/finishing-software/
