A blackout would suck because I love checking HN throughout the day. That's exactly why we should have the blackout, because that's a small taste of the nonsense that could come from SOPA in relation to many other sites we all check daily

All the things he listed that WordPress doesn't have are the reasons why I like it. With the exception of better caching/CDN integration, I like that WordPress is simple, straightforward, and super hackable with plugins and theme function

One of the sharpest changes (I guess a "point of inflection" it looks like?) seems to be at about 65, or the most common retirement age (here in the states at least). I wonder if there's a connection? In hunter-gatherer societies, elders ol

I think in the context of 1994, there probably weren't many people posting jobs like this. But nowadays , literally tons of posts on Craiglist say the same thing as Bezos. But it's just reality to me. People often point to one thing and ma

So next time you see a job listing for a new start-up, just remember Amazon started the same way, and that new listing might just be for a company that turns out to be the next Amazon, or Facebook, or Google. I think this is a little hope

I love getting lost in cities too, but if I'm in a rush nothing beats the simple "streets go this way, avenues go that way" grid of NYC. (that's just what I say in my head with matching hand motions)

A huge thing people forget with WordPress is that most .org-powered sites are on shared hosting. Simple little bugs make it easy to hack an average WP site, but just setting things up right can solve a ton of issues. I'd recommend the digwp

Wouldn't consider it a new language, but after all the back-and-forth articles on HN about CoffeeScript, this year I really spent some time learning the fundamentals of it. Mostly though, I just drastically extended my capability with the l

This is a classic look at fragility versus optimization, much like what Nassim Taleb writes about. A lot of his charts to demonstrate this concept (that the more "optimized" something becomes, the more fragile it becomes) look like the ones

This is not everything from the 960 Grid System, but it's the stuff I use most. A lot of the other SASS grids I've seen are just too complicated for my personal taste. This math and setup is simple and small enough that, (with comments remo
