you (and I) are absolutely spoiled by Visual Studio w/SSDT. there is nothing even remotely close to that level of integration for database development in other stacks.

I've found views, parameterized-views/table-valued-functions can be a nice compromise to keeping the SQL relatively simple and thus ORM friendly without sacrificing performance.

FlexLM is horrific and does terrible things like stashing data in unused/unformatted areas of your disk as well as dropping litter all over the registry and filesystem. I have to use Tableau which I actually really like but because it

you should package this up as a bloom filter and simple js routine web developers could use to do client-side checks to validate passwords. edit: on 2nd thought looks like a bloom filter for 5B entries at p=0.01 would be ~5GB, so not exactl

you're right, the performance of the local storage on i3 instances is a lot better than normal EBS but still nothing close to what you would get from just buying an Intel P4500 or similar though. http://www.aerospike.com

you can also pickup an enterprise flash device and have a few terabytes of 500k+IOPs for a few grand whereas reaching a similar performance profile via provisioned IOPs will cost you 10x as much every month.

I would totally get behind that, especially if it could be actual wattage used and not just based on the tdp of the CPU. Nothing sucks more than having to pay huge money for servers that are sub 5% utilization because you're trying to

We've had database servers with 2-3TB of RAM in production for years. You can get servers today with 24TB RAM - they're 8-way so lots of NUMA going on but still tons o' RAM.

I bet a 64c Zen chip would be amazing with mixed SQL Server workloads but SQL Server's per-core licensing will make it crazy cost prohibitive. $456k for one server - ouch! Here's hoping per-core licensing goes tf away.

there were some interesting alternatives to the diskette icon if you scroll to the very bottom of the search results after searching "save" .. the micro sd card and thumbdrive icons are cool and I think pretty intuitive for "

ah, yeah that hasn't changed. I've been using Skype preview on Win10 and it's very nice. It's very much a native desktop app - certainly it's the successor to the old Delphi client.

We are well beyond moving to 64bit on a needs-only basis. At this point it's about dropping legacy and future proofing. There's also no reason 64bit apps should have a larger memory footprint; the ISA and addressing modes are actu

If you want to specialize in javascript and html that's fine. The middle/backend/API then ought to be developed by someone knowledgeable in SQL - but it's still a developer, not a DBA. DBAs are sysadmins not programmers.

in my experience 99/100 major debilitating webapp performance issues are from SQL-oblivious developers making basic variations on the "n+1" problem, executing a thousand queries instead of one, failing to think in sets, treat
