Ah, so you already have an existing business. I believe that most programmers do not. You have to work to make money from your business (most likely). With an authority site providing data that people want and are linking each other to, you

As I stated here [1], It's definitely not easy, though I've found the only difficult part to be getting initial traffic and consistently building high quality backlinks. It's not something that can be automated, but it can be outsourced. [1

That is true, but if the penalties were severe, you wouldn't have Monster, Trovit, Juju, Indeed, SimplyHired, etc. all reposting the EXACT same job and all ranking nice and high. Autoblogs work entirely on copied content and do REALLY well

You are correct in that #15 is the hardest part. The rest is trivial. Here's a starting point: http://www.google.com/search?q=build+initial+backlinks I like paid directory submissions, doing guest posts on blogs, building high quality Squ

I believe that most people would be willing to set up an "unfulfilling" side project to generate an extra $2,000 USD/month.

I'm by no means an expert, though I've worked with experts and picked up some stuff from them. The rest I learned from Google and various forums: http://www.google.com/search?query=on-page+seo http://blogs.sitepoint.com/ultimate-seo-chec

No one will do this because their sites will be mirrored verbatim within 24 hours. It takes a couple minutes to write a scraper using Nokogiri. :P

> I've done no link building You have 1,211 backlinks. You have no meta descriptions on any of your pages. The links to your content pages (e.g., http://yakkstr.com/posts/3635-Cute-Friday ) aren't inside a H1/H2 tag on your index pages

I've seen 2-4% CTR across my sites. Positioning of your ads matters a LOT. If you use Wordpress, consider using something like http://www.ctrtheme.com or ProSense.

Half my rake tasks in production will NOT work with this hack in place. I amended my similar comment.[1] Rake 0.9.0 is extremely broken. I recommend reverting to 0.8.7. [1] http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2572790

Regex themselves are fine, but people try to do ridiculous things with them such as "parse" HTML. They're used when they shouldn't be, and they go unused when they should be used. :)

On second thought, don't do this. Add rake 0.8.7 to your gemfile and bundle update. Rake 0.9.0 is insanely broken.

It is. Remember when Pakistan blocked half the world from being able to access Youtube in 2008?[1] (Though that was more incompetence by network engineers than legitimacy of the method) [1] http://www.ripe.net/internet-coordination/news/in

I ran into this bug today in a fresh install of the latest Rails/Rake. If your rake tasks are currently exploding due to Rake 0.9.0, making your Rakefile look like this will fix it: https://gist.github.com/4b4e24877b107b00bcba

Wow. Why not move the domain to an anonymous registrar (or 301 all the traffic to a new one), host the site on offshore bulletproof hosting, and put the roms back? That's a huge chunk of change you're probably missing out on.

Also, check out Boatmurdered[1], a "Let's Play" of Dwarf Fortress. It is pee-your-pants funny and contains some strong language. The sequel, Headshoots[2], is also funny but not quite the same calibre as Boatmurdered. FYI, the name of your

I gave away my last 10 BTC a month ago on HN. Oh, well. I'm going to wait until BTC is proven to be government-proof before getting back into it, if ever.
