It's not acceptable to do that, it's just a really difficult problem to solve for CL.

The Ruby on Rails auth system I use, Devise [1], will automatically update a user's password to use your new work factor on their next login. You could do something similar. [1] https://github.com/plataformatec/devise

You're looking at more like 5+ billion/sec today. There was a listing of modern consumer video cards + their hashing capabilities posted on another HN story recently, but I can't find it.

> can brute force millions Modern consumer video cards can do billions per second now. You might as well just store them in plaintext instead of using SHA1/MD5 with or without salting. :/

I hate how the full document loads, is displayed for 100ms, then I get redirected to a "This document is not publicly available" page.

EVE Online handles a retarded amount of concurrent users using Stackless Python. There was a story on HN recently about it.

Jython and JRuby don't suffer from the GIL and GVL respectively from their reference implementations. You can go thread crazy with JVM-based implementations.

Cool. Glad they thought about that situation before switching to this new release/versioning system.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Didn't realize there was an extension to let you run extensions. :)

If I update, I'm going to have to manually edit the few extensions I actually run Firefox for to increase their "max supported version" string to 5.x. That's one downside I can see with this new release system.

The prison system in the US is a multi-billion dollar industry. More prisoners = more prisons = more jobs (guards, cleaning staff, psychologists, etc.).

Sounds like they need to add a spec where a valid user tries to login with an invalid password. That's quite embarrassing.

Can't edit parent post now, but here's an article with links to other articles about FBI priorities: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100809/17262010563.shtml Identity theft and missing persons don't pay the bills, I guess.

There was an article a few months ago that showed the FBI spends most of its resources going after copyright infringers. Maybe you could claim some of your intellectual property was stolen next time?

I'm sure they could have done everything in Erlang, but they mentioned that they only have four developers that do Erlang within the company. Erlang developers aren't as prevalent as Python/Ruby developers.

So, do you actually have any numbers to answer the grandparent's question? I'm guessing $80,000 USD + benefits (or equivalent) at a minimum.

Yeah, the evented MPM has always been the redheaded stepchild of the Apache family, which is unfortunate.

Haha. I think Apache is the only popular webserver nowadays that actually still can't beat the C10k problem [1] without an extravagant amount of system resources. Process- and thread-based concurrency sucks for HTTP(S). Event-driven is the

Possibly, but how many companies will actively target a platform that, say, roughly half of their visitors can actually use? It won't be a safe bet like Flash is with 97% of users having it available. Installing an entirely new browser is a

It's good for the NSA that there's no way to securely communicate over an insecure medium. It's also convenient that all Internet infrastructure exists inside the USA.
