For an entertaining fictional account (from the British side) I can recommend Patrick O'Brian's The Fortune of War (and the subsequent The Surgeon's Mate , although only the first part deals with the war of 1812).

Googling “ bankid privatägd kritik” gave me one hit - to Flashback. Hardly mainstream...

Banks issued ID cards in Sweden for decades. Source: I worked as a teller and knew the procedure. Passports only became legal IDs in the last decade or so.

As a Swede, I'm glad this is the case.

Also used by the short-range ferries in Stockholm's Hammarby Sjöstad. Source: have travelled on these many times and observed the weird wake.

I've been aware of the Emacs function 'spook'[1] since the late 90s. Here's a current output from `M-x spook` on my machine: > Europol BATF bluebird secure Narco banners Blister agent BVD fraud SADMS UKUSA mania weapo

I can’t say I’ve noticed that - I saw most Tarkovsky movies in the late 80s before I knew about these details. When it comes to Stalker (which I recently rewatched) I’d imagine the sound would add to the strangeness.

OK I see, the very short sequence in your example was a stand-in for a potentially infinite one. I got nerd-sniped into understanding what was happening as I found the behavior surprising.

I found this very surprising so asked a Python-knowledgeable acquaintance who mentioned that this works as expected >>> seq = [x for x in range(1,11)] >>> list(filter(lambda x: x % 2 == 0, seq)) [2, 4, 6, 8,

I'm ashamed to say I've never read any of Butler's novels, although I've been aware of her since I got into SF in my teens.

I think Gab split from the Fediverse? I.e. it’s no longer federating with other instances.

I hate not being able to integrate links in running text - it's been a feature of the web since the start, having to awkwardly add "see this link:" followed by a newline everywhere would drive me mad.

I like this idea, but that means you need to be able to decide what the "lowest" level is at the beginning (i.e. I seldom use anything below <h3>.)

That's the future defense against this kind of short squeeze. Funds will engage these subs (or hire people) and deflect interest from the stocks they're shorting and maybe steer it towards competitor's.

Worth noting that the license fee is now paid as part of the regular tax payment. So the tax authority manages the collection, as opposed to previously when it was a separate agency.
