I've been an Apple customer and a Facebook user for about the same duration. In that time, Apple has taken many measures to improve security and privacy. Facebook on the other hand has gone in the opposite direction, to the point of le

Putting aside the gatekeeping aspect of this comment, I found the rest of the arguments made for keeping this model closed really shallow. I would have hoped for a much more reasoned and logically sound argument from a professional research

Even with a charitable assumption that ads will stay limited to a free tier; this will still reduce Netflix program quality because stories need to have breaks to insert ads into without feeling weird. Remove the ads and you then have story

Its certainly not ignorant or irresponsible and if you feel that way, I suggest its because that's the message the news dealers want you to feel. Dobelli sums it up best: https://www.gwern.net/docs/culture/201

Once you realise that the "bad news" is not current events, but rather a poor experience driven by chasing clicks instead of quality, the reasonable response is to disengage from the machine and go elsewhere. A simple example is t

It's OK to not like the work somebody produces. It's not OK to be a dick about it and harass them. The author owes you nothing.

Many people are not yet skilled at giving feedback. Many will improve, with guidance. Those that don’t will blunder along, wondering why they can’t make it in the world.

A single email will waste anywhere between 3-30 seconds of my life. On aggregate, junk email, enabled by disrespecting marketers and ongoing minimisation such as your comment, will waste months.

I see this often and it is a ridiculous over simplification. This entire thread has stories of broken corporate culture causing people to leave the company and somehow you’re translating that as win for HR? In most cases, HR aren’t the ones

The software library in question wasn’t gifted. It was made open/available for re-use from a library. The person who chose to put it into _their_ code took ownership of its ongoing maintenance in their instance of its usage (presumably

Your response indicates two things: 1. You have no idea about teenagers. 2. You have no idea about the causes of the opioid crisis. Also, I did not conflate the two which you appear to think I have done.

Yes, it’s definitely not that older people with experience understand why this is a bad idea. The hubris of youth is useful for bringing change, but experience shows that often the effects of that change are poorly understood and often caus

Yeah, it’s a real gotcha. Not surprised the Borg don’t get it. Right now I have my uncle nearby and he knows at least how to use a computer. Things are going to get real fun when he leaves and my 75yr mom is on her own with the tech.
