I agree with your general approach to a more holistic interview process. I haven't thought too much about the weights so can't comment there. I'm pretty sure the weights vary depending on roles: interviewing a tech lead for M

That's nice of you to say, though I'm not sure I earned your compliment. Re experience - yes, if you're interviewing for someone with deep Java or ML knowledge certainly make sure the interviewer can assess that. Logic puzzle

Like I said I speak for myself not Google. They're both valuable, perhaps for different types of work. A balanced tree does not tell me much about a person's knowledge but how they are able to apply and learn CS concepts does. Dee

Of course computer architecture, compiler knowledge etc is valuable and part of the interview process. I was referring to the general process of evaluating- - thus the question was focused on methods not content. Additionally, explaining ho

Disclaimer: I work at Google but in no way do I represent my employer's views. These are all my personal opinions. I interned successfully at FB, Microsoft and Google as a SWE in 2008-2010 and interviewed with a lot of other tech compa

Laziness? I didn't like remembering to carry when multiplying 45x16 so I did 40x16 + 5x16 - easy to add two numbers in your head, hard to remember two shifted partial results (the way it's done on paper). Different media require d

Values can be nuanced. Yes to free market but guess what, it occasionally needs checks and balances because while it works for a particular company it might bring society as a whole down. Infrastructure like roads and electricity should not

I agree with you on the first points. We don't know how soon computers will match us in intelligence and they're still underpowered but 2 things might accelerate their rise: 1. GPU computing. Much more similar to the brain. 2. IoT

A lot of these "arcane" topics have long-term horizons. Agree with everything else but the whole point of research is to probe the space of possibilities (theoretical and practical) to find major ideas. Most of them fail but that&

I'm a bit surprised - I do almost all these things in my head anyway, never thought them as tricks just that I'm weird and cannot model school methods like others do. (Not trying to brag)

There's a darker explanation than the two suggested already: that Russia actually controls people high in the administration (possibly more than one, including Trump) and intelligence agencies are fighting them.

Interstate roads and highways are also critical elements of national security - they act as the internet for transportation (by providing multiple redundant routes that can be easily patched, unlike railways)

Simple solution that gets close to the social truth: ask team members to rank everyone else. Average the rankings. It works surprisingly well and for teams of up to 10 people or so differences in rankings are mostly noise.

My conclusion looking at the executives at multiple large tech companies is that you can get there without a graduate degree but it's much less likely. A Master's is good but an MBA is a better predictor, even for companies that c

Mental afflictions rarely have a clear A or B diagnosis. Comorbidity is common, in that you have a bit of A, some B and flavors of C. One explanation is that it's an underlying physiological issue: subtle imbalances in brain chemistry
