When I was a kid, in the 60s, I loved cars. I'd visit the showrooms every September to see the new models. And some of the Pontiacs from the mid to late 60s were just stunningly beautiful. Buicks too. Then the 80s hit, and GM was surpa

The business geniuses who foisted this idiocy on us (software professionals) are now saying what we said 10+ years ago: it's an obviously dumb idea that doesn't actually save money.

Why is this a bug? There are no guarantees (beyond not going backward). You can't count on dense ids anyway. What if you have concurrent transactions that get ids and some of them abort? It's your application that's buggy if

The TV series Silicon Valley has proven eerily prescient. First Weissman scores turn out to be real, and now Nip Alert comes to life.

So what is the relationship between the 1984 film described in this interview and the one that was released (with the same stars)? Is it the identical film?

I'm not convinced of this. I modified the code to do something with the sums. #2 is now slightly slower than #1, but the absolute times and the ratios are otherwise about the same. http://pastebin.com/vbUSdKGc

By the way, I typically see #2 slightly and consistently faster than #1, which doesn't make sense to me. But I wouldn't expect a 3x difference in favor of #1.

I thought that the main point of the article was about memory locality. If that is so, then the kind of pointer (auto vs. shared) is a distraction, isn't it? (My experiment was intended to be about locality only.)

I was wondering about this very issue the other day, and wrote a little C program to try something similar. I tried three things: 1. Create an array of random ints, (sort them, not that it matters), and then time how long it takes to comput

Read the last sentence: The bounty would be paid by major tech companies, who, after all, benefit greatly from this software, and are getting screwed by the holes. Google, Yahoo, Amazon, for example.

I find your points unconvincing. If a VC is uncomfortable with betting on a startup, maybe he should find another line of work. About your second point: I'm not sure what argument you are making. Yes, of course the VC would like a guar

Imagine a VC that buys 50% of a company for $50 million, for a $100 million post-money valuation. If that company then sells for $75 million, the VC gets more than 50% of the $75 million. The VC gets his or her $50 million out

I wrote an early Java ORM (1996-2000) and I've come to the conclusion that ORMs are a bad idea. ORMs make the easy even easier, and the difficult impossible. The basic problem is that writing good, high-performing SQL is hard enough as
