Imo, whatever annoying tradeoffs a commercialized web brought with it, it was wholly worth it for giving literally anybody the ability to learn anything they are curious about. 1080p Harvard compsci lectures[0] available for free would have

What special-case syntax? The only brazenly pythonic thing in there was the (iterative) tuple unpacking, as in (for) k, v in dic.items() which is just k, v = (<key>, <value>) for every key value pair in the dictionary

I would argue the inverse - at any time there are a tiny set of startup ideas that are so primed for implementation, that they are nearly bulletproof against the inevitable mountain of mistakes that even great teams will make.

I don't care how many years you've been programming, nobody git pulls a 10,000 class java codebase without nervously gulping.

Climate scientists, in an effort to avoid panic, are downplaying the calamity and timescale of this crisis. It's common knowledge in the climate science academic community that the 2018 IPCC report was overly conservative in its modell

I'm assuming that the value of these papers are self evident from the title if you understand the topic/context of the paper, much like HN with many of the white papers published here.

From that information, I would actively want to check SciHub out if I had never heard of it. Academia + notoriety sounds novel and useful. Part of why SciHub has succeeded is just how easy it is. Copy/pasting an arbitrary DOI from any

Most products sold on eBay / amazon are too simple for detailed seller ratings to matter. The usefulness of a 5 star review system is far higher when there is a wide and fairly continuous spectrum of expected performance (food, airbnb)
