From their paper: http://tmg-trackr.media.mit.edu/publishedmedia/Papers/527-in... it appears they use 900 motorized slide potentiometers connected to bowden cables. Current prices from mouser suggest that the actu

That is a very strange way to generate molecules. It would be interesting to see if this is any better than other approaches used to generate molecules like those used in drug design. It would be particularly interesting to see how this com

3d printing has been around since the 90s, but just recently did the public start to hear about it. It didn't change everything, but now 3d printers are affordable for hobbyists. Aviation companies are using it to make weird ultra-ligh

Well if you have stiff enough molecules, then the distance a given molecular structure moves due to thermal fluctuations can be smaller than an angstrom. In addition, if one cools said system down, thermal fluctuations become less of a prob

The interesting thing is in research at least, 'nano' is starting to deliver. We've had artificial molecular switches, motors, transistors, and other components for years but we have not been able to put them together. Now we

Or how energy dense fat is if you ignore the conversion efficiency. For this calculation they also assume the whole volume of the battery is filled with fat. Humans actually aren't that efficient in terms of conversion of chemical ener

of course, they are completely ignoring the conversion efficiency of the fuel sources to electricity. Let's take diesel for instance, conversion efficiency of chemical energy to work for small engines can be about 30% at best, so a muc

You should implement energy minimization or rather use openbabel's energy minimization functions. Doing SteepestDescentTakeNSteps every couple of frames and updating atom positions should give you some neat behavior. Pretty cool to see

I don't know exactly what you mean by plaintext notation but Avogadro is pretty good. Nanoengineer is also pretty cool if you are willing to dig for it.

I disagree on a couple points about actuators. First off brushless electric motors have pretty amazing power to weight ratios, problem is that they have really low torque to weight ratios. We don't need moldability if we take what we l

You are correct, actuators are a huge problem and there isn't as much being done to fix it. Right now one of the biggest problems is that we don't have efficient torque dense electric actuators, that is actuators that can produce
