I just tried translating Lithuanian -> English. Yup Google Translate is that good. Even for not wide spread languages like Lithuanian.

Yeah £1200/mo sounds like a reasonable middle level developer salary in Eastern Europe (I am from Lithuania). It's a good point about English speakers. I think it has to do with network and comfort zone. When you are 25 and have s

There's a few more genuine use cases for shorteners, one of them is using links offline (e.g. print advertisements). I noticed my university does that and I kind of like it. It definitely won't remember company.com/section&#x

Yup. Whenever I see a link to something like Wired (i.e. 90% of text just more or less meaningless, 10% real information), I just go straight to HN comments. Doesn't feel like I'd be loosing anything.

I'd suggest hiding upvotes count in /newest page. After submitting a bunch of links, some of them making a front page, I noticed that there is a fairly strong effect of social proof. People check /newest, see that some post a

Regarding to HN, problem is that social proof takes a huge part in determining what gets on the front page. People check /new, see that some post already has 1 or 2 upvotes, checks it instead of some without any upvotes. The upvoted on

Might not be a coincidence about the reason but probably coincidence about the timing. I am fairly sure that the Chinese government has sources which bring the news faster than WP publishes them :)

Yes and no, I think. Depends on your starting point. I did that to double my rate in ~8 months (every time I am looking for a new client, I tell my rate 20-30% larger then the last time). But if you are starting at $20/h or so, you mig

Yup. It might seem like it's shit loads of money for something, especially when the project is rather simple. But something that simple might be a tool that save 10hrs/wk of work for a client. Patrick (again) has a great post on i

Good points! I noticed similar trend, mainly with non-paying (or paying super-late clients). At the very beginning, I tried to be very understanding and find excuses for them (shit happens, you know). But I got screwed over for being so nai

I think it (assumption that friends are afraid) doesn't really apply to the majority of HN audience. We give and read criticism (constructive or not) every day here, it's the second nature for us. However, we are a small group of

I totally agree. It's true even for us, experienced Web guys (and gals), in this mess ruled by packages and their managers. For example, I am trying to make my first Rails app outside a tutorial. Okay, I want to use bootstrap. Should I

Excellent comment. Reminds me an idea from Soccernomics (a great book on soccer by economists who happen to love football), that a club manager is mainly a PR person and goes on to statistically prove that he has almost nothing to do with t

I guess that's the other side of being mainstream - people, who are not perfect users, are using your product too. Those not perfect users are not only the ones who post questions but also the ones who answer them just for the points.
