I'm not going to try to sell you on Mercurial vs. git, mostly because I think that argument is pointless, but just so you're aware, Mercurial also supports reordering and combining patches via mq. And that's an area where I personally feel

Rebasing avoids cluttering up your history, and can help make your patches more useful. Instead of showing a fork in your history, followed by independent development, and then a merge, you instead show your branch applied to the tip of th

So, disclaimer: I'm a Mercurial fan. There are two big things git has traditionally done better than Mercurial: lightweight branching, and rebasing. Both were possible in Mercurial using mq (plus qguards, in the case of lightweight branchi

Unfortunately, that's probably relatively complicated. The internal Mercurial convert utility doesn't speak Perforce, and while tailor ( http://progetti.arstecnica.it/tailor ) does, I've had mixed results with it. You can always give it a

I gave up on darcs awhile ago, but darcs 2 honestly does greatly reduce the merge issues that used to plague it. If you're still on darcs, get the upgrade. You may find you no longer need to move to a new product.

I honestly think most of it's just ignorance. I don't honestly think that anyone who has used Mercurial in anger can seriously be unaware of merge customization, or of the fact that Mercurial has simple revision numbers in addition to hex

Their bzr v. Mercurial comparison is a bit disingenuous at points, if not outright misleading. Firstly, having used bzr 1.8 and 1.9, and Mercurial 1.0 and 1.1, the claim that bzr's speed is close to Mercurial's is downright hilarious. Ther

I'll third the recommendation for Mercurial. There is no question that git has more community momentum--something which I hope will begin to change--but Mercurial is nevertheless an outstanding distributed version control system. Mercurial

If I could, I'd like to suggest using Mercurial instead. It is vastly better supported on Windows, has a simpler workflow, and allows HTTP-based authentication--no SSH keys required. Plus, if you really need git-like flexibility--rebasing

Zed in real life is actually a very personable fellow. I know he has deliberately crafted a persona of over-the-top arrogance and hubris, but you should appreciate his blog for its hipster irony, and not think he takes himself seriously.

In this case, nearly all of the changes are architecturally minor, and though this looks like a very nice Windows release, it largely looks that way precisely because it is not a radical reënvisioning of Windows à la Vista. What we h

Provided you're using qguards, mq allows you to ditch temporal connections between patches as well. An early version of this article left that out specifically because I modified the default behavior of qnew on my system to create guards s

The problem with the video demo for this particular trick--indeed, the video demo for virtually ANY trick--is that you're seeing the best-possible performance. Don't get me wrong; I've seen this stunt performed in person, and it's pretty i

I think that the linked blog post goes a bit overboard. Atwood himself says repeatedly that you should start with a normalized schema; he just also says that denormalizing for performance reasons should not have such a strong stigma attache

In college, there may be some, but they're few and far between--largely because they, like you, are holed up in their dorms all day playing WoW. Once you graduate, and you both start having more normal lives, it gets much easier. Here in N
