Zipcar had been trying to move off Tcl, but I don't know how seriously they were focused on that or what their status is. My impression is that had much more to do with trouble finding experienced devs than any issues with the technology st

I agree completely that the ORMs in Squeak are bad, and many abandoned, but as of six months ago, ROE still worked. ROE is not an ORM per se; rather, it's something close to LINQ on a SQL database: you write your queries in relational alge

You're correct that most Smalltalks have a changes file that keeps a log of everything you've done, but that's now how you do version control or share changes. The changes file in practice is more of a kind of local version control, or unli

It's even more nuanced than that: the Squeak project took the time to actually do a full hunt for all of the old contributors, figured out who they were, rewrote their code when necessary, and got signed legal agreements authorizing the rel

Businesses that are using Linux for their desktops are already in a different situation, since corporate updates and lock downs can be managed through a custom apt repository easily anyway.

SuperGenPass ( http://supergenpass.com/ ) does that in a way that is more likely to generate strong passwords honored by sites (e.g., multiple cases, punctuation, etc.). It comes both as a bookmarklet, and, if you don't want to use that, a

I remember in high school philosophy class describing prototype-based systems as Aristotelean and class-based as Plutonic. I'm amused you've hit upon the same general idea. (For what it's worth, I like Self, apparently named after an Aristo

Even moreso than that, many of the lights in New York still run on genuine relays. You can easily hear them at many street corners in Manhattan, happily thunking away. (The New York Subway is also still powered almost exclusively by relays,

I do...but you could accuse me of being somewhat biased: http://bitquabit.com/about/ If anyone has any questions about Kiln or FogBugz, I'd be happy to answer them here. I'm glad to see so many positive comments though, especially about K

I kind of passionately disagree. I think that both Apple and Microsoft's tools blow Android's out of the water. Objective-C and C# are more pleasant languages; the graphics libraries are in vastly better shape (ever wonder why Android scrol

I assume you're being somewhat facetious, but the answer is a definitive yes. The team had previously used Campfire, but felt it had a lot of UI issues, and attempted to solve them with chat. I don't know for sure whether they intended chat

Indeed. There was something wonderful about seeing not just real desktop shots, but desktop shots with the correct contemporary hardware and software. Mozilla-the-app, Emacs 19, thick crappy Dells. Just a nice break from Hollywood effects

I really liked it. It's certainly not 100% accurate, and I don't think it's trying to be. It glosses over some major aspects of Facebook's history (like Zuckerberg's friendship with Graham, the heavy focus on Wirehog, the importance of Dust

Yep, sure does. That said, as I explained elsewhere in this thread, I profoundly don't get what the problem is. It's no different than syncing with Google, unless you have a hangup about Facebook.

I'm not even convinced of that. Use MobileMe? Your address book gets synced with Apple. Have an Android phone? It gets synced with Google. Maybe Plaxo? Same deal. This should be treated the same as those solutions, as near as I can tell. I

Neal Stephenson's merged historical fiction with science fiction before, quite successfully (e.g., the entire Baroque Cycle , including the Cryptonomicon ). I'd be surprised if there weren't some fairly heavy sci-fi motifs.

So, the way I figure it: let's say each phone call lasts only two minutes. You literally just look up the number, call the person, say "You're awesome!" and then hang up. That still works out to just $10/hr or so, not counting phone costs.
