Amazing. Literally yesterday I was wanting to hear Ray Charles sing “Michelle” by the Beatles and thought, neural nets should be able to do this some day. It’s interesting how the Holodeck from Star Trek suddenly seems — at least in parts —

I was reading Carl Sagan’s “Dragons of Eden” years ago and realized that while humans may have intellect, emotionally we’re very similar to other animals. Then I had the thought: when it comes to being slaughtered, what’s worse; having an i

It’s really the extensive Apple frameworks that make a Mac or iOS app — the layer written in Swift that’s not using UIKit or AVFoundation, etc, is probably minimal in comparison. So, direct ports are unlikely to be made that much easier

Curious: did you complete all the exercises in the book? Not doubting you in any way, just wondering if that’s a possibility. I know I’ve gone through books without doing the work, while on others I have done the work — and it’s usually a p

I’m very in favor of remote work, but I think it remains unfair to compare this current situation with working in the office. The more extroverted types already prefer the social interactions of the office — but right now, most people can’t

This is just my random thoughts, but it would seem like Apple learned a lesson with the Mac Pro that they're not looking to repeat. The other advantage of creating high-end tools in-house is that it moves hardware, which remains a huge

Anecdotally — I have a lot of friends and colleagues in the music industry — I wouldn’t say Pro Tools is more prestigious. It seems pretty split on people’s preferences and old habits die hard, but a LOT of top composers and producers use L

In the book he uses the example of trying to get a stripped screw out of something. It’s a classic example of where a lot of people will kind of mindlessly make the problem worse. But when you approach it calmly, maybe it leads you to reali

Someone already mentioned “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”, so I’ll go with something I read last year, Carlo Rovelli’s, “Reality is Not What it Seems.” I don’t think I really ever grasped the concept of relativity fully until re

There’s another great book on Zen called “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind”. I think what Persig is getting at is “non-judgmental observation”. The ability to look at things with no ego involved, like an absolute beginner — so that you’re mind is

It’s really only recently coming into focus. Because if you look sector by sector it’s not clear (in terms of emissions). But when you look close it’s clear that a sector like chemical production is heavily weighted towards producing fertil

It’s too bad college has become so transactional. Not judging — there’s a lot of wealth inequality in the world, and the vast majority of people don’t have the luxury. But there’s another aspect to college — the friendships, the discovery,

The thing is so wide that light needs to travel 140,000 years (!) to get from one side to the other. That’s just so hard to wrap my head around. I never even really considered that our own galaxy is 100,000 light years across. Think of all
