If this is your first introduction to Brian Eno, do yourself a favor and look into his discography. David Bowie’s “Low” is one of my favorite albums of all time (a collaboration with Eno and Tony Visconti. Side point: Visconti created one o

Hawaii has one of (if the not the ) largest solar farms in the world — and they use sheep for weed removal. We definitely should be reforesting land, but land that is already pasture has a lot of potential for regenerative agricultural pra

So, this is a bit “out there” but something I’ve considered for a while is: 1) NASA scientists published a paper that showed just how difficult it would be to find evidence of a past, advanced civilization on Earth. 2) There was, if I under

Tl;dr, companies would rather not spend money complying with methane regulations. They’d rather try and win the messaging war. This is largely about the gas escaping during oil drilling. Big companies are more willing to play by the rules t

We’re at our farm in Northwest Oregon and it’s been a surreal few days with fires in nearly every direction — but luckily not on top of us. There has been untold devastation not very farm from here. The air quality has been oppressively bad

Definitely a very risky time to be out in the wilderness, anywhere west of the Rocky Mountains. And that’s probably understating it. It’s really something to see the entire west coast on fire right now. We live up in a forested valley in no

I know what you mean — we’re restoring an oak woodland and between the various springs and poorly drained soil, there’s a very small window where an excavator can actually get in there to work. Our Douglas Fir stand is on good soil, but get

That timber harvester looks amazing . As I commented below, the weight distribution is a pretty appealing aspect for minimizing the impact on soil. Though, unclear how much better it is then the tank treads which also do a pretty good job

Totally. I want that walker for my woodland, because it looks a lot less damaging to the soil (less soil disruption / compaction). The other thing is it would be nice for climbing to spots that don’t have easy road access. This way you

Not all “foreign” plants are invasive, but the ones that are... they’re a real problem. They displace native species, disrupting the balance of ecosystems. Himalayan Blackberry in the Pacific Northwest being a good example. It will choke an

Don’t have to convince me — I see photos as art too. I thought paintings with these because of the abstract shapes. So, not really photo-realism, but interesting compositions to lay down paint within.

These would make great paintings, for sure. I’d hang a big one in the house. The original Cosmos had a great episode on life at different scales, and the magnitude you’d have to view earth at to so see evidence of life. Before that, there w

Sorry if this post seemed like a response to yours. It’s not. I didn’t find your post unreasonable, nor did I think you were implying that climate change is non-existent. You simply were pointing out fire’s role in nature, and I added my o

I was elated to read this, and then disappointed at the comments here. It seems to be feeding an argument of “see, fires are natural and these trees are old - Climate Change is a fear-mongering hoax!” Firestorms are not the meandering fires

Not all fires are created equal. While fires are a natural part of many ecosystems, many of today’s fires are more powerful and become “ladder fires” where a build-up of fuel on the ground causes the fire to reach the crowns and cause sever
