2^85 is for finding a collision; finding a preimage of a specific hash would take 2^128 steps of Grover's algorithm. That's thought to be beyond any possible future computer system.

Not as rare as it should be (see https://cryptosense.com/blog/more-weak-rsa-keys-in-network-d... ) -- but there are much easier fixes than QKD.

Given how common SSL interception is becoming, I don't consider TLS sufficient protection for passwords. Your security appliance may have a legitimate need to see my network traffic, but not my password. And if someone pwns the applian

Much more appropriate than the Mac II crash sound -- that was a happy arpeggio that completely failed to convey the message that something had gone wrong.

It occurs to me that the NSA's behavior in this case is consistent with this being a situation like the DES s-boxes. If they designed Simon & Spec to be resistant to an attack that the open crypto community doesn't know about,

>But (afaik) measuring means disturbing, because you have to exchange some energy with the system in order to perform the measurement. This isn't necessarily true; QM allows what's called interaction-free measurement. Say you h

Setting up Charles requires two explicit authorization steps (each requiring passcode/fingerprint/face verification): First, network interception requires adding a VPN config (the dialog warns that "All network activity on th

I'd recommend against the Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide -- it uses a lot of bad practices (like unquoted variable references!) that you're better off not learning. Instead, check out http://mywiki.wooledge.org/Ba

It's not very far from his argument. The article quotes him as saying “We need a major revolution in our understanding of the physical world in order to accommodate consciousness. The most likely place, if we’re not going to go outside

What you're describing is a local hidden variable theory. In this case, the "hidden variable" is who has which fruit. It's "local" because there's no remote influence -- Bob eating his fruit doesn't c

Keep in mind, this is being done in a seed release to developers. I don't have any inside information, but I'd expect it to be a while (i.e. iOS 11 and/or macOS 10.13 at the earliest) before APFS becomes the default format. M

I saw the firmware-update progress bar (one of several similar progress bars that macOS/OS X can show during startup) during a 10.12.2 update. So that's a bit more confirmation...

Technical correction: the proper designations are "DE-9" and either "DE-15" (if you're referring to the high-density three-row connector used for VGA) or "DA-15" (if you're referring to the original l

The example given in the article: grep some-string /some/file | sort is a good example of why -e and pipefail are dangerous. grep will return an error status if it gets an error (e.g. file not found) or if it simply fails to fin

Agreed. In addition to still having trouble with tabs and newlines, setting IFS still leaves the other big problem with unquoted variables: unexpected expansion of wildcards. The shell considers any unquoted string that contains * , ?, or [

SIP shouldn't interfere with DYLD variables for normal (non-"restricted") executables. Unless you're using something like Java, which normally runs via a restricted launcher; but in that case you can bypass the launcher

You can also selectively disable the dtrace restrictions, while leaving the other SIP restrictions intact, with "csrutil enable --without dtrace" (in Recovery mode).

You can't use a reference frame moving at c -- it'd be like trying to use a coordinate system where the X and Y axes are parallel to each other. Also, distance isn't really what locality is about; it's really about the c

The thermodynamic limit cited (Landauer's cost of erasure) to show that 128 bits is enough (barring algorithmic advances) doesn't strictly apply. Charles Bennett[1] pointed out that any irreversible computation (i.e. one that invo
