I think Ron was referring to the development process, rather than the finished program. The way Lisp languages and environments handle REPL-based interactive development is significantly more powerful and flexible than e.g., Rubython or eve

Ulysses is definitely doable, but it marks a point when high-brow literature stopped being something every reasonable, intelligent, and educated person enjoys reading. It's a chore (less so than FW, of course), and of questionable valu

This happens over and over again. Oh no, the Sea Wolf works, but is too expensive at $2B/boat! Let's scrap the working program, use "lessons learned" to build a cheaper attack submarine. Years of delays and cost overruns

In classical Latin texts, I remember running into a lot of sentences which start with "itaque" (which means "so"). The habit hardly started recently.

I consider the zsh scripts a proof-of-concept more than production code. It should be a relatively simple matter to rewrite the gpgd scripts in a portable manner, provided gpg and tar are available. I'm sure Windows has some kind of se

When the brouhaha about TrueCrypt started, I wrote a zsh wrapper for "mounting" GPG-encrypted tarballs as directories: https://gist.github.com/gcv/b7d72023a851f2edf951 It works well as a TrueCrypt replacement

TrueCrypt has portable volume images. It's nice to make a container on Mac OS and give it to a Windows user and know it will mount as a filesystem or drive.

I miss Erik. comp.lang.lisp was the last newsgroup I followed when USENET went into its tailspin, and I gave up on it when he left. He was an incredible teacher for those who listened.

Quite a few English and Russian Cyrillic letters unify just fine. E and A unify, and have identical lowercase forms, e and a. They don't really have different meanings, no more so than the letters E and A in English and French. T is mo

Think of this code as taking a built-in data structure and repeatedly refining it by transforming it into a different data structure. With only a little more practice, you'll find reading (and writing!) code like this becomes second na

Could you please post some links with explanations about incompatibilities? I still use GPG 1.4.18; I'm willing to upgrade if necessary, but am I also supposed to re-encrypt everything?!

TFA says the GnuPG code is pretty rough. Has anyone (with crypto knowledge) looked at it? Confirmations and denials welcome.

I donated last year, and just donated again. Really happy to see that this post on HN has traction, and delighted to watch the counter go up. GPG and other security projects need a way better tech PR push.

Will there be a score to go with the results, or just a ranking? It would be nice to know why someone is a winner. It would also be cool to know the tech stacks involved, especially to those of us making evaluation decisions right now. :)

Rust's error handling looks like the Maybe monad. That seems pretty reasonable in Haskell. I'm a little surprised by the criticism in the article — is the author saying there isn't enough syntactic sugar?

Any modern Lisp gets you there. The three leading dialects, namely Common Lisp, Racket, and Clojure, are all excellent. Each makes different trade-offs in what it offers. As a former Java programmer, you will probably like Clojure's ne

I agree, some Emacs commands use windows unintuitively and destructively. Dired and various searching modes (grep, ack, ag) are major offenders. You should (1) mitigate the problem with winner-mode so you can easily recover your window conf
