joking aside, i do think that as AI continues to pervade public consciousness, we will start to see some creators market their products as being "AI-free" or somesuch, for better or worse. It's like lemon market virtue signal

I'd actually appreciate that if it's not too much trouble. I hope this feedback from an interested potential user is useful for however the design winds up :-) In case you're curious, a few more details about this application

It’s rough out there, folks. Anecdote: a while back, I did an internship at a YC “darling” company that you’ve definitely heard of. They apparently liked me so much that a couple years ago, the lead of intern recruiting emailed me encouragi

Does anyone have details on VVC’s auxiliary stream support (transparency / depth)? I work on large-scale outdoor scene understanding datasets and being able to encode stereo RGB video with 16-bit depth would be extremely helpful!

Here’s an unconventional choice: grab a copy of the old RPG Maker XP and let them at it. Most of the difficulty is selecting and arranging art assets. There are scripts, but the language syntax is all controlled by button presses and dialog

If users leave Facebook because spam, and if spam is easy to generate with Llama and friends, Meta wouldn’t open-source models that so easily generate spam, I mean. The incentives are misaligned.

Huge agree. I didn’t realize this applied to me the first time I saw this story yesterday. It was the rename that got me to click. Honestly I strongly feel the title should be “fundamental bug in Arc browser (CVE 123-4567)” or similar.

If this essay is right, one corollary is that Meta will stop investing in Llama once they notice GenAI makes people use social media less.

This is also how things work at Google. Google also maintains a monorepo with "forks" of all software that they use. History diverges, but is occasionally synchronized for things like security updates etc.

Coding models these days use an inference every time you stop typing. Let’s say it’s 0.1 inference oer keystroke. If you keep VSCode open all day, I could believe it’s a significant energy draw. Google now uses several inferences per Google

With reports like this discussing training cost, is the usage reported per-model? Or is it aggregated across the entire creative model development/exploration process? At the risk of doing original research, one thing I don’t see a lot

Another corollary is that AI companies don’t train one model at a time. Typical engineers will have maybe 5-10 models training at once. Large hyperparameter grid searches might have hundreds or thousands. Most of these will turn out to be d

Google’s TPU energy usage is a well-kept secret / competitive advantage. If energy efficiency isn’t a major concern for them, I bet it will be in a couple years.

That’s the tricky thing about conservation. These problems have multiple sources! Every time a completely new energy-hungry product category is introduced, the carbon budget gets harder and harder to balance. In the 19X0s it was television

I’m still kind of skeptical. M-series Apple hardware doesn’t even get warm during inference with some local models. Edit: Nah I’m convinced, look at table 1. Inference costs are around 20mL in a datacenter environment.

jq's syntax is different, but well worth remembering. i have some flash cards if you'd like. a teensy amount of effort pays huge dividends with swiss knife software like this (and things like matplotlib, tar CLI options, etc)
