I'm sorry, I have a hard time with articles that complain but offer no solutions (and the one line at the end about Akismet doesn't really cut it for me.) I've seen some captchas that have you do simple math problems or other basic question

Somewhat tangential of a question, but does anyone have recommendations for buying cheap solar panels in the states? Like, suppose I wanted a solar panel to put in my apartment window so I could charge my phone. What would it take to get so

Has there been an explanation as to why they were using DES? Gawker started in 2003, a year after DES was superseded by AES, and there were plenty of more secure algorithms being used at the time.

Neal Stephenson's "Anathem". Seriously one of the best novels I've ever read. He's an excellent writer, and after about the first fifty pages I couldn't put it down.

Actually, there was an article in the NYTimes four years ago about lactic acid, and it turns out that "lactic acid is actually a fuel, not a caustic waste product. Muscles make it deliberately, producing it from glucose, and they burn it to

I'm curious now: what would be a more appropriate solution for each of the cases he gave (rsync, and mysqldump on a large database)?

I've been on a telecommuting project for the past several months or so. At some point we realized that we weren't really functioning as cohesively as possible, and the solution ended up being in finding a group chat tool. The author here us

I'm trying to wrap my head around your comment. How would one self-promote without coming off as arrogant or obnoxious? (And I'm not asking this snarkily; I'm genuinely curious.)

JRR Tolkien worked this way as well. He wrote out all the days for the books and where everyone was, even down to what phase of the lunar cycle the day was. There was actually an exhibit of Tolkien's notes that toured around for a bit, and

Honestly I wasn't aware of Haystack's security issues, but http://haystacky.s3.amazonaws.com/www.oblomovka.com/wp/2010/... cleared up a bunch of it.

If I was an average user and saw GTD in the first line like that and didn't know what it meant, I'd probably lose interest in the site. The definition is in the copyright text at the bottom, but some people may not make it down there.

Thanks for those recs; I hadn't heard of either of them. You should give The American Dollar a listen; they're a really great postrock band from Queens. And Mercury Program, too, but they're in the heavyweights category, more or less.

The Hacker's Diet ( http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/e4/ ), a guide to losing weight for hackers, has an exercise component based around this. It's a little outdated now, but the concepts behind it are pretty good.

There's an Android app, called Simeji, that's the same thing. Each button is one of the groups (a, ka, sa, etc.) and then you swipe in each direction for a given sound. I think it's -a if you just touch, -i to the left, -u up, -e right and

I don't think this is anything new; according to http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/maps/thread?tid=428921... , it's been that way since at least May 2009.

A fair amount of people have complained that they switched to Chrome from Firefox because FF is overly bloated, takes a long time to start up, and so on. Seems to me that a browser that also runs separate apps like this would take a conside

There's a review on Engadget ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1243630 ) that's mostly the same story. After all the drama that happened with this tablet, it's really a sad ending to what started out as a potentially great product.

I just looked up how to do this, as I couldn't figure it out. Slide open the keyboard, hold the shift key and drag your finger across the text you want to copy. I just tested it on my Droid and it works. Not sure about other Android phones.

What about browser plugins? There are a bunch out for Firefox ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/tags/display/RSS?so... ). I used Sage several years ago and was relatively happy with it; surely they've improved on it since then.

Is this really worth making a big fuss over? The only time most of us would interact with personas is when Firefox upgrades and we see the update splash page. Aside from that, it basically stays out of the way and you can use the browser no
