Most houses in the US are made of wood. In Los Angeles they often have tile/concrete roofs, but I've read that in a situation like this the problem is the vents under the edge of the roof that lead into the attic: if anything burn

LiveCode is still a thing! They just released version 10 a bit ago. If you need to build standard-ish interface apps -- text, images, sliders, radio buttons, checkboxes, menus, etc. -- nothing (I've seen) compares for speed-of-delivery

Yep, I had a vague notion that I was doing too much work, but I was headed out the door so I wrote the naive/better than the original solution, benchmarked it quickly, and posted it before leaving. Yours also has the advantage of being

As far as I can see, all the proposed solutions calculate the sums by doing division, and badly. This is in LiveCode, which I'm more familiar with than Python, but it's roughly twice as fast as the mod/div equivalent in LiveC

I did <any research at all> and found the following in case anyone is interested: 1. It appears Amtrak sleeper cars accommodate between 30 and 50 people. 2. An Amtrak coach car seats up to 80 people (fewer than I expected).

Sure, I'm dramatically oversimplifying, but I think my point still stands: putting it another way, trains have an ability to accommodate travelers in a way that nothing else -- planes, cars, buses, etc. -- can even approach. It wouldn&

The whole point is to offer sleeper accommodations. That requires more people to clean up/prepare the train for the next trip, but not (many) more for the actual operation while running. Although the goal is to get more people to take

This is the part that really frustrates me. Not that I've researched, but it seems like trains should have basically unlimited space for passengers, at very little increase in cost -- a five-mile-long train takes maybe 1-2 more people

I'm curious what you intend by your comparison to the Russian train system -- Russia has more distance to cover/is more spread out, but the U.S. has over twice as many miles of track. I'm pretty confident that that comparison

Interesting. For me, while I don’t love the idea of being forced into something I don’t want, psychologically I understand that my choice is being taken away. In the case of deception or fraud, I would feel complicit and stupid, and that wo

Nice! I looked for meta data and found only an anemic thing, but embedding a whole file with structured data makes perfect sense. But of course this only pushes the responsibility back a step: why the heck isn’t Adobe pushing developers to

The real question is: why is everything stuck in PDFs, and the more important meta-question is: why don't PDFs support meta-data (they do, somewhat). So much of what we do is essentially machine-to-machine, but trapped in a format de
