They're doing a bit of quantum computing research and patenting stuff left and right and it's making everyone in the field uncomfortable.

I don't really see sympy and the like surpassing Mathematica. Even maple is kinda having trouble. If when I'm buying Mathematica I'm paying for a proper implementation of the risch (integration) algorithm, it will have been m

I was burned out on software by the time I entered college... I had been working internships at big tech companies, a lab, an Internet non profit... I basically felt the same thing you did at that point. Every codebase looked like the same

What big endian platforms do you have to support? Got an SGI Indigo somewhere in your lab?

Why would you ever do that? You'd end up a bunch of unreadable rust code wrapped in a gigantic unsafe {} block.

The main problem is that the product is just garbage and is getting its lunch eaten by onenote. A note taking program that has terrible stylus support and routinely loses data... Come on.

Turns out that if you bend over backwards and use some libraries and do a bunch of awkward stuff you can make most languages fast.

Technically it can be. Seth Lloyd has a paper on a way to run gate based algorithms on an adiabatic computer by adding a clock degree of freedom.

What do you mean dirty vs clean QC? Do you mean adiabatic vs gate based?

Start learning it once there's a standard programming language for quantum computers. It's so far off. I say this as an experimentalist in the field.

What's really funny is I started in software (have code committed to some open source projects... BIND, Valgrind), and then moved to Physics. The code is garbage because the constraints are totally different. Experiments and code can b

I like implementing things as languages. I'll probably use perl 6 for its built in grammars. I suppose there are languages with nice parser combinators but I'd like to see what it's like having it designed into the language.

Surprise. Evernote is just such a shockingly low quality product. First of all, as a note taking company, you CAN NOT LOSE DATA. EVER. I use my notebook for keeping data and derivations and lecture notes. Data is the most valuable thing in

I dunno what these other people are going off about but if you apply quantum mechanics to gravity, you can't renormalize it. If you look too deep at the standard model you run against cutoffs that you yourself have to impose to make th

The question you might ask is why doesn't EVERYTHING travel at the speed of light. The speed of light is one in some units. We just happened to develop the meter and the second before we could measure the speed of light. These units ar

But it is. I can have devices that use single electrons. I can measure shot noise. Theories in terms of particles work. Turns out that theories in terms of off-mass-shell particles describing higher and higher terms of perturbation theory w
