With regard to SSN, the real issue is that it is used as both an identifier and as an authenticator. It's fine as an identifier, but authenticating with a number that anyone can steal (and yet, perversely, is difficult to replace with

I'm from the Atlanta suburbs, and Comcast has been terrible here. 300GB data cap (as mentioned in the article), and they've been steadily jacking up the price (now $70 a month) for unimpressive (30 MBPS) speeds. For people who don

Isn't PG's life story along these lines? IIRC, he'd program for a while, quit to paint for a bit, then go back to programming when he ran out of money. I think he started Viaweb in his early thirties, which he sold to Yahoo a

I've been pretty happy with Charged (www.char.gd). Nicely summarized articles on the tech news for that week, with links to the originals and links for further reading.

I suffered a moderate-to-severe back injury while surfing when I was 19. It wasn't debilitating, but it regularly affected my quality of life and was healing very, very slowly (at the rate it was going, it probably would've taken

Very few people devote 4-8 hours a day to chess. In fact, if you're willing to devote just three hours per week to target training, you'll quickly improve relative to others. The important thing is to divorce your enjoyment of the

I don't know of the specific tutorial you're mentioning, but a good way to avoid memorized opponents is to play the London System as white, and a kingside fianchetto system as black. In both cases you can play the same moves again

For those who already know how to play chess but want to get better (preferably quickly with minimal, targeted training), I wrote a guide called "How to Get Good at Chess, Fast" that hit #2 on HN: http://www.gautamnarul

I recently met someone who traveled to Detroit regularly for work. He said downtown Detroit was terrifying--no cars at all to be seen, and only homeless people around him. He chose to stay in his hotel most of the time, because he feared fo

PG, thanks for writing about this and bringing both this case and the death penalty to readers' attention. Richard Glossip's case is similar in many ways to Troy Davis[1]. You may recognize that name--in 2011, when he was executed

Don't move to Georgia (I assume when considering Georgia you meant Atlanta or suburb of Atlanta). Pros: Low cost of living, lots of space relative to other places, people are probably friendlier than they are in NJ. Cons: Traffic is ab

A good approach would be to use Elo ratings from chess in a similar fashion to how Mark Zuckerberg used Elo ratings for Facemash when he was at Harvard. Assign each application a rating of 1000. Randomly select two applications and show the
