I don't believe it's legal for a for-profit organization to hire interns in the US without paying them[1]. Obviously that might not apply in other countries. Anyway, the work you give an intern would depend on the skills and maturity of the

(67) ClickApp I built something similar at a previous job. I never really thought that anyone outside the domain it was built for would use it. Now this has got me thinking about it again... I wonder if it could be marketed to the same sort

I'm working through Walling's "Start Small, Stay Small" and I found a couple of niches that seem ripe for the picking. The problem I'm having is how to get a foothold (information products, apps, starting an SEM vendor, etc.). I haven't fou

I'm working to become one such person at the moment. It would be awesome to be able to do so while working somewhere like AirBnB or CarWoo. By the time I'm an expert at this, I might be making enough money that working for others isn't real

Regarding the stackoverflow link: I think it's telling that the accepted answer is the one the poster wanted to hear (i.e., a very optimistic estimate). I wonder how often such things happen on Q/A sites, and how often it ends up misguidin

What domains? I read (or click through) to most everything that hits the front page and never hit paywalls, except for academic journals. As annoying as it is to be blocked by a paywall, I don't think that's a valid criteria for censorship.

I should also build my brand and portfolio more. That, I think, is the biggest barrier next to geography.

It seems that despite the ever decreasing barriers, people just don't want to hire, or aren't comfortable hiring, remote workers. I live in Montana. I grew up in Kansas City, and went to school in NY. There is no language barrier, I'm a ski

Do you have any idea how difficult it would be if you found a great employer while on the working visa, and wanted to make the move permanent?

The way silent auctions (charity or otherwise) I've participated in usually do it is to have a list of bids near each item. You can circulate throughout the evening, changing your bid until bidding closes.

I don't have all of the relevant information. The obvious missing piece is how much other people value the item. It seems kind of silly to be upset by being outbid when you are participating in an auction with public bids.

I'm wondering this same thing for myself. I don't want to give the school a fixed number. I want a live body that can call me. I might go over my "limit" if it's within reason at the last minute...

I wonder what it would take to remove the dependency on the .NET runtime. Could anyone with relevant experience and knowledge comment?

Most smallish startups want to see a solid portfolio of projects and/or open source contributions. I have similar problems to the OP, and don't have much of a portfolio. What I do have is boring stuff from my day job (the small amount I can

I think The Stand is one of his best novels. It is also one of his longest novels (almost 1,000 pages). It is also one of his earlier novels, so maybe it's missing "the fat."

For me, my offer of help in the RoR Offer thread was motivated out of two things. First, just because I like helping where I can. Second, I might get the opportunity to work on something cool, or meet someone new, that I might not otherwis

I probably spend less time thinking thoroughly because I can type fluently. If I typed slower, I'd have to be more confident that what I was typing was reasonable. It's probably just a discipline issue on my part.

I find the raw canvas API to be a little bit clunky and unwieldy. The syntactic sugar makes it a lot more likely that I'll use canvas without a second thought. Making something more pleasant, even just a little bit, can lower the barrier en
