What a waffle. Can anyone extract useful information from this meandering trainwreck of an article?

Speaking of questionable EE conventions, why do electrical engineers seem to never use nanofarads? 10 nF capacitors are usually labeled as 10,000 pF or 0.01 µF, for seemingly no good reason. Also, the ohm symbol is frequently omitted from r

Same for me. "Schemalessness" is even worse. I have no idea why this word caught on instead of "aschematic", which is much easier to parse.

We're used to the theremin as a spooky background effect, but there are a few people who have used it as a serious musical instrument. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSzTPGlNa5U https://www.ted.com/tal

It's an inferior clone of Monotype Modern, just like Arial is an inferior clone of Helvetica. In terms of being easier to read, I find the extreme contrast between thick and thin strokes does not work well on a screen.

Looks like Times to me. It's a standard mathematical font, and anyway is more pleasant and easier to read than the abominable Computer Modern fonts.

Book titles like these are just more evidence that some mathematicians don't understand (or willfully misconstrue) the meaning of words like "basic" or "introduction". "Basic Algebra" means "material

Infographics have not gone away. You can see one pretty much every day on the front page of the New York Times. You can see one at every subway station. What hopefully have gone away are the crappy infographics of a few years ago, which w

I guess a hard-line frequentist (if such a person exists) would counter that you can't assign probabilities to hypotheses or fixed parameters. Then Bayes's theorem (and every other statement about probability) is true only when ap
