To me programming is both engineering and something akin to literary composition. You want your design to be engineered well - perhaps "over" engineered for redundancy and reliability - but you end up actually building it with a formal la

When I squint at Go's syntax, underneath the C-like facade I see: * higher order, first class functions * lists (squint at the slice a bit; also chans) * maps * flexible structs (curiously, you attach "methods" to them much as you attach fu

This is such a tired comment. Just once I'd love to see someone provide an explanation or proof of this assertion.

I actually like the explicit "I'm reading from a special list" syntax because that's what it's doing. A lot of Perl's "ugliness" comes from the language being pretty honest about what it's doing.

I'll be honest - XMPP fits this description pretty well, at least as far as I read it right now. Most clients don't seem to understand this but that seems tractable.

This is so tired. Plenty of others responded with arguments and data and yet somehow I doubt you'll change your ignorant mind. Upset that I made an unfounded conjecture about you based on insufficient data? Exactly.

Objective-C, despite not being popular outside Apple, isn't proprietary at all. Many of Apple's frameworks are but the language itself is open. GNUStep is a resource for that.

Computer Science has always seemed to me to be the study of algorithms and information, correctness, methodologies, and their applications. Math is used in order to advance this knowledge. It is readily apparent to me that everything in CS

And if those functional languages are Turing complete, then they are equivalent to all other Turing complete languages, and thus the C-H isomorphism would hold for all Turing complete languages.

People come to me a lot with ambitious ideas and ask me if I can help out. Very often I'll find that "help out" means "build the entire product" because while they have ideas, they can't build them. If I press about payment, they'll offer m

If this statement is a fact it will have evidence, and if it is an opinion it will have a justification. A productive discussion will necessarily have one or the other.

This makes no sense at all. Ideas should be copied, redistributed, and refined by multiple parties. The execution best matched with its audience and context will do well. This post suggests that it is somehow not right for a person to draw

Agreed. It's true that math and programming intersect insofar as one is trying to prove the consistency of imperative commands (either by proving isomorphism with the lambda calculus or Hoare triples or something) but even writing something

Everything I know about Haskell leads me to believe its purpose is to be a research bed for functional programming concepts. Correctness is first; speed is a nice thing that happened later. And readability is even less important. This is li
