A couple days ago Fred Wilson suggested someone aggregate a user's twitter links, so I actually started indexing and analyzing twitter links to provide a constant stream of link previews (unfortunately, no search atm). Check it out: http:/

fravia's writings were a big part of my motivation to learn how computers work when I was just a fledgling programmer. So long and thanks for all the info!

I would argue that the "optimal" way depends on how much funding you have.

I second that notion. You'll love working with these guys. Also, Mark makes some killer sushi - you can probably convince him to bribe you with some.

I enjoyed the conversation. I'm a bit surprised that the community got so fired up about it. I haven't been around on the site for all that long, so I'm a bit curious to know if there are other topics that are so divisive to the group.

I agree with his assessment. Sometimes ugly terrible hacks are the best solution given the external constraints (time, 3rd party code beyond your control, whatever). And if you have an ugly terrible hack, you should definitely comment it.

I'm opening a gourmet dessert store this summer. Last week a Harvard MBA student asked me if she could do a free summer internship for me so that she can have something to put on her resume. I'm still really surprised about it - is the mar

I think url-shortening is just a really bad idea in general. Certainly giving normal people the ability to track who clicks on their links is a good idea, but you don't need to obfuscate the url to do that. You could create a nice tracking

I've noticed that the laws of supply and demand seem to apply to tax rates as well. NY and CA, for example, are booming business hubs and have very high taxes. Presumably, the government thinks that there is high demand for living and wor

I sort of think of Google as a channel changer for the TV. When I need to go from one place to another, I use the remote, but the bulk of my time is not spent changing channels - it's spent consuming the media that I'm interested in.

That's a very interesting way to look at the problem - algorithms like mine and Techmeme's do indeed digest the full article whereas HN does not. I had thought the primary issue would be whether or not the site provided a summary / thumbnai

I'm actually very near to launching an automated news aggregator and I'm wondering if this is going to affect me. My suspicion is that sites like Techmeme / HN or smaller will probably be left alone. What do you guys think?

I got a CS degree from Stanford and looking back I have to say I really regret going to college. If you're interested in building your own business, that time and money is a hell of a lot of opportunity cost. So my advice to you is: Screw c

Does framing annoy anyone else? I never use these bars, they're just like popups that I have to squash before I read the actual site.

I almost ended up using Comcast's "Comcast Cares" Twitter account the other day due to a billing mistake. http://twitter.com/comcastcares?sess=7fd22e18b74852a62dc6659... As annoyed as I am with my frequent service outages and the billing

I hadn't thought about that angle - I'm sure Youku and Tudou, the native competitors, are getting huge traffic surges right now.

I often think a startup should act like it's waging a guerrilla war - move faster than your opponent, do things your opponent is unwilling or unable to do, be hard to kill, win the grass-roots support of the people.

Who was the founder? Maybe I just don't understand the industry, but I always figured starting a biotech company was only really an option for the well-connected and well-funded. It seems really expensive.

I'm 24 and I've never owned a TV nor do I ever plan to. There's very little on TV that I want that I can't get in a much more convenient way (according to my own schedule, for example) online. A lot of my friends are the same way. I'm not

Regarding competition, I'd expect less from established players in the market, but as unemployment rises, shouldn't the number of startups go up as well?

I found the bit about the US prison population growth rate interesting. The author points to a Reuters article that pegs prison population growth rate at about 4% ( http://www.reuters.com/article/bondsNews/idUSN07275062200710... ), and, acc
