Your anecdotal Chinese mother is more extreme than my anecdotal Chinese mothers. Unfortunate.

As extreme as Chua is in the article? No. They are certainly strict especially when compared to the stereotypical "white" mother, but not like Chua. I have to admit, most (not all) of the Chinese moms I know are rather more liberal and open

I thought this looked intriguing but since I am on a Mac I cannot even download their informational pdf... they block even that attempt to find out more. Pretty stupid on their part as now I'm not only not interested, I'm annoyed.

Just to throw this out there and give an actual Chinese mom perspective on this... The two Chinese mothers I know well here in the U.S. (my wife and her cousin) both of whom were born and raised in China, both of whom have 2 children of abo

For a solid text editor, Vim (MacVim if you prefer). For a solid IDE, Netbeans. I find it easier to use than Eclipse.

>it's Eclipse-like but fast It also costs $100 (though it is on sale right now) where Eclipse costs $0. Not an insignificant fact for many of us.

Since the "it's not free but..." angle has already been played I'll add to kqr2's question... Where are the best free places to migrate all of your Delicious bookmarks? ------EDIT--- OK, at a minimum you can go here: https://secure.delicio

I've never used github so this is my first foray into using it and it is down! Does that happen often with github? I've been unable to clone from it (or even connect to the website) for a few hours now.

I'm fascinated by how precisely arranged the atoms are. Not surprised per se, I just think it is so neat to see the precise structure of something at such a minute level of detail. Now I want to see what it looks like even lower down the sc

The market must be pretty small for Mac native text editors (and they must be difficult to implement on a grand scale). Otherwise some company would have walked into the gaping void that has been the delay to release TextMate 2.0 and releas

This is a good point. I'm a 42 year old software french fry cook (rock star code ninja I am most definitely not) but I'm happy, make money and get to spend time with my family. The downside is that I don't exercise my IQ as much as I'd like

Given the limited set of things he goes over (with the exception of block indenting trouble) you could replace "Python" with "PHP" and still have the same article. Don't crucify me, just pointing that out.

This would suck! I'd have to send 1099's to so many office supply and computing supply companies it would be ridiculous. Then again, I could hire my 12 year old son to do the work and pay him a rate fat enough to drive my taxes down... hmmm

I find that such goals, for me, don't work. I make daily and weekly goals (sometimes monthly) as that is about as far out as I can realistically plan. Anything much longer and I'm just fooling myself (and it has taken me a couple of decades

He's right. I know I'm guilty of this. Just get something done and out the door... quit navel gazing and pre-optimizing. One of these days I'm going to take such advice to heart. One of these days.
