I still see Google as a silly name, but at least it has some rationale in the corporate philosophy and a hint of geek cred. "Bing" just smacks of a committee of corporate drones trying to look hip with an unintentional parody of younger, co

I'm inclined to call this survey bullshit. There's no information available about it, except a blurb at the very bottom of the infographic claiming that it's from their survey of hiring manager. At best, it only tells you how lazy hiring ma

Gruber can be very partisan, but this is one of his better posts, written respectfully and intelligently with none of the partisan slant people often complain about. IMO, this is an example of why he shouldn't be banned on HN.

The Cortex-M3 microcontrollers are awesome. Much more powerful than the older 8-bit architectures available at the same price, and amenable to industry-standard tools instead of just the compilers and IDE sold by the manufacturer. I think

Except that productivity and GDP have been rising as steadily as ever. The wealth is there; it's just being entirely captured by the wealthiest citizens.

My understanding of the origins of emacs & vim: emacs originated as the tool of choice for programmers. In those days a programmer would sit at a single text-based terminal all day, working dawn-til-dusk in a single editor process on a

You make it sound so big-brother-esque, but users are the ones who chose native apps over the browser. iOS has had excellent HTML/Javascript support since the first iPhone - vastly, vastly better than any of its contemporary competitors. In

I'm sure you're right. I'll always remember fondly the amazing deals I often got in the late nineties, before most of the dotcoms offering them went bankrupt.

Linear algebra is the foundation of modern engineering. Before computers, the only mathematically tractable problems were those that could be reduced to linear problems. With computers, we can take on those formerly intractable problems by

My husband was an early employee at a company that was acquired in a mid-nine-figure deal. The founders walked away with at least a hundred million each. Employee #1 got a low seven-figure payout, after about ten years of grueling overtime.

Exactly. This is my biggest problem with the "earning versus learning" philosophy. Both times I was employee #1 the founders had no interest in sharing any aspect of the business side of the company. I was there to build the product; anythi

Just because these things can theoretically happen at any company doesn't make them equally likely. Startups are far more likely to go bust or lay off people with little warning.

Yes, employee #1 is almost always the worst-off person in the company. They get to work like a founder, without the financial benefits. I've been there twice; it isn't a lot of fun. Either found or join a company that has funding.

It seems to be standard procedure for Amazon. They carry a far wider selection of products on the American site than any of their international stores. Until the last few years they basically only sold media in Canada.

This is normally a problem solved by a four-year vesting schedule w/ a one-year cliff. IMO, companies offering minimal equity with a promise to increase it later is a huge red flag, since those promises rarely come to fruition. Equity is gi

Minecraft on 360 is never going to be more than a niche, given the type of game it is. If it's available through Steam, however, the majority of PC players will end up buying through Steam and that population will pressure the non-Steam PC
