Similarly, I am very interested about how they'll handle real, relatively less rule-oriented more entropic traffic, like NYC and other old eastern cities.... Depending on how they are coded I feel this will be not a big deal at all, or

I agree that the USA driving test system is insanely weak, but they definitely do something. I failed my driving test twice before passing it when I was a college kid in Arkansas. One thing I noticed is the examiners seemed to intentionally

This is a big enough market I'd be surprised if there isn't just a checkbox on the app "Do you want the taxi that responds to be one equipped with (0 / 1 / 2) child car seats?"

That is a huge misconception. You can get to rural beauty with mass transit and/or a bicycle in metro NYC actually. My friends regularly organize a bike ride where we take the metro north to rural Putnam County then bike back the 30 so

This does bring up an interesting question though -- does self driving doom mass transit? The answer is no -- the real ultimate benefit of mass transit that taxis can never replicate is _thoroughput_ in a dense area. Articulated buses or li

Hahaha, also, 100% safety on 90% of trips sounds like the kinda thing Google would do, and 90% safety sounds like the kinda thing Uber would do.

It would never happen because FAA. Taxis on the other hand are regulated on a state by state and even town by town basis. Anyway, not much blood to squeeze out of that stone. A 747 fits about 400 passengers and only needs 2 pilots. Doubling

I agree with that actually. The task /as defined now/ is impossible for a human, but yes, actually designing it for human psychology would make it better. A great idea I saw on another comment thread was to keep safety drivers bus

Well, but leverage matters. Whoever owns self driving patents will take close to 100% of the profit margins involved in taxis for the life of the patents. For example, Apple gets most of the margin out of an iPhone. Apple could switch hardw

Actually, it may be an instance of a "tragedy of the commons" but I think the most strategically optimal move for a state when there are 49 others is to ban it and let "sucker" states do the testing, and then immediately

True, but the concept still applies here. Uber has gained a well deserved reputation for being careless as long as what they are being careless with belongs to other people.

This is what's always confused me. The usual play is to suck up to a corporation in the hopes that a bunch of jobs or other investment will show up, but self-driving testing is kinda a perfect example of something that will not give an

In practice, yes. In theory, as is obvious from all these comment threads, people seem to think the "safety drivers" (think about that name...) are there to actually, like, you know, improve safety.

That's one point of view, if you're a goodie two shoes who automatically follows and agrees with every law and rule you ever heard of, even if it violates your own basic ethical values. Another point of view is that the state of a
