Yes. I use it with my whole family. You can create a tracking session and have everyone join in. From the app and the website you can see everyone on the map. The only trouble Iǘe had is that the Android app sometimes crashes and I have to

I started by setting up a synapse server (with docker it is quite easy, although reading all the config options takes some time). I already had a server with docker services running there, so deploying an extra container was easy for me. I

According to this Canonical blog post it should be being sold in EU: https://ubuntu.com/blog/dell-xps-13-developer-edition-with-u... I have the 2017's version, loving it and now I'm worried about replacing it

True. The Nextcloud docs suggest at least 2GB of RAM. On the other hand, mine is running at 400MB right now. I guess it also depends on the frequency and how it is used. We mostly use the apps on the phone and file app integrations (Ubuntu

I do, on Digital Ocean. I'm using DO's Spaces (S3) as file storage. I also suspect very strongly that it is the main source of the slowness of the nextcloud (but it is super cheap!). The main pain in the ass is having to update ev

Depending on the usage and how core it is to the problem we are solving, the architecture of the subsystem may be affected negatively by the wrong choice of data structure. It is also not hard at all to learn and understand the difference o

Since I started interviewing applicants, my two favourite questions are: a) What's the difference between an array and a set? b) Describe how a hash table works. The reasons are: a) It is important to know the difference between ordere

So if all goes well, it will become an "open federated protocol", according to your definition, in a few years when it is more stable, mature and multiple interests (companies) are governing its direction? Sounds like a fair posit

Maybe I'm missing something. What do you understand by federated protocol? As I understand it, Matrix seems to be an open protocol that supports federation. The open protocol part is evident by the extense documentation of the protocol

Matrix is not an app. It is a protocol. You can find the specification here: https://matrix.org/docs/spec/ There are also multiple client and server implementations already. You can find them here: https:/&#

Some years ago I made a script to backport a project I had developed in py3.6 on my free time but when I wanted to use it in prod at work it had to be py3.4: https://github.com/Galbar/norfs/blob/adb2a4ea885997

Devil's advocate: democracy worked well (at least as well as the last ten years) before everyone could voice their oppinions in a worldwide public forum. We had journalists that spread the information through various channels.

As I see it, a company can either offer a public platform for everyone to voice their oppinion, not moderate and not be responsible for what is published on its platform but let the authorities handle illegal/harmful behaviour. Or they

Are you suggesting increasing the price for everyone? You'd remove the incentives to choose one over the other but less people will be able to eat. That's dangerous. More over, you'd remove the new tech's incentive to be

My point is that if you are free to change provider without having to quit access to your existing network (same username/handle and connections), then you are free to backup your data and move it around to different social media provi

I think this is why we need more federated social media, based on protocols, just like I can own my email account (by getting a domain, for example) and I can move it accross providers and interoperate with other people on other providers.
