Yup! Exactly. It’s a numbers game. I’ll never work at a FAANG probably because of it but that’s ok. I’ve carved out a pretty cool career AND I do side projects and games so it’s fine.

Very much so. I've had to explain that some of them were just contracts, some of them cease to exist anymore, and some went through layoffs. The reality is it's more like 13 companies but yeah.

This, I've been laid off about 6 times, only once because of my own accord (and I freely admit my fault there). I've left a company 2x that count. I started my career in 1999. What a year to start...

Yes. Naming is hard, but it’s easier when you aren’t using pop culture as names for things. Shelob service only makes sense if you are a Hobbit.

I totally forgot about bad managers. Thanks for reminding me. I’ve only left two jobs in my career due to bad management.

There may be some of that but that hasn’t been my experience. Most of the time it’s because of comp or as another poster reminded me, bad manager. If people are leaving because they coded themselves into a corner, the code review process wh

That hasn’t been my case at all. If you have that, maybe your interview process is broken.

Work for yourself but you won’t get work life balance until you’ve built something stable. You’ll have much higher satisfaction but you also have much higher risks. If you are risk adverse or just want something steady so you can enjoy a wo

We job hop for a number of reasons. The primary one being compensation when their current job isn’t keeping up with inflation. Another is lack of promotion when you went above and beyond (as you were coached to by your manager, for that pro

I came here to write something similar. The article lists a few repos as examples of bad naming when the reality is, it’s examples of miss-naming. For a long long time I’ve convinced people to use literal names for things and not get creati

Exactly. So long as merge conflicts stay within the team (i.e. your macroservice is logically divided within the code, models and services aren't just thrown into a models and services package or folder. I really detest merge confl

You are right about it not being speculation but you are wrong on how you see your tenants. You may have a family in there now that said “Oh, we are saving to buy a house soon, we just haven’t been able to save enough” which was my statemen

This is a great approach. I like to add “macroservices” into conversations around this because I think it sums up the end state better. It’s not micro. It’s an entire billing system. It just only has API’s and not a front-end. Integrate it.

I don’t know the specifics. All I know is that one day it was gone and we had to go through hoops to get it back. We migrated to AWS within a month. Since I was more familiar with AWS, that’s the part I helped on.
